Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response identifies the chart’s general subject and year, and the statement that China produced more electricity than it consumed is accurate. However, it does not summarise the chart: it gives no meaningful overview of the main comparisons, reports no figures, and stops at “then we are moving to chicken,” which is unrelated and leaves the task largely unaddressed. The response is also 106 words below the required minimum, so there is not enough relevant information to demonstrate selection and reporting of the key features. To improve, provide an overview of the leading countries and the broad production–consumption pattern, then compare several countries using accurate figures from the chart.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to guide the reader through the response with “first” and “then,” and the opening establishes the topic. However, the ideas do not develop into a clear sequence of comparisons, and the final reference to “chicken” breaks the progression rather than introducing a relevant point. The response is presented as one short run-on sequence, with little punctuation or clear separation between an introduction, overview and details. Organise the report into paragraphs and use linking expressions to connect relevant comparisons—for example, move from the overall pattern to the two leading countries and then to notable exceptions.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few relevant words, including “production,” “consumption,” “countries” and “energy,” so the topic is recognisable. However, the vocabulary range is very narrow and several spelling errors—“campare,” “counsumption” and “chicken”—make the message less clear. “Moving to chicken” appears to be an inaccurate word choice and does not communicate a chart comparison. The phrase “produce more energy then the consumption” is also imprecise for describing the data. Build a small set of accurate chart-reporting expressions, such as “electricity generation,” “consumed,” “stood at” and “exceeded,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a basic sentence sequence and communicates one simple comparison: China’s production was higher than its consumption. However, sentence structures are very limited, and the opening runs several ideas together without effective punctuation. In “they produce more energy then the consumption,” the verb form does not match the past-time reference to 2014, and the comparison is not formed grammatically. Capitalisation is also inconsistent, as “china” begins in lowercase. Practise writing complete, punctuated sentences in the past tense, such as “China produced slightly more electricity than it consumed in 2014.” Then vary these with accurate comparative structures.
