Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart describes the ten leading nations for the generation and utilization of electricity by 2014.

Overall, it was evident that china and united states was top nations for both production and usage of electricity while korea produced and consumed least electricity.

Initially, china remained at top in both production and utilization and produced 5,398 billions kWh and consumed 5,322 billions kWh by year 2014. Moreover, united state yield 4,099 billions kWh and used 3,866 billion kWh and remained at second position in 2014. Furthermore, russia generated 1,057 billions kWh and consumed 1,038 billions kWh. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main leaders and the broad pattern that China and the United States dominate both measures, and you include several relevant figures. However, coverage is partial: the overview says Korea was lowest, but Germany had the lowest production, while Korea had the lowest consumption. The claim that Brazil, Germany and Korea were the “top least” countries is unclear and overlooks that Germany’s consumption (582.5) exceeded its production and was higher than those of Canada, France, Brazil and Korea. India’s consumption is also reported as 689.8 rather than 698.8. To strengthen the response, give a precise overview of the large gap between the top two and the remaining countries, and accurately compare the lower-ranked figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph, with information generally moving from the largest producers to smaller countries. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “Similarly” help signal additions and comparisons. However, the progression becomes less clear near the end: “However” is repeated, and the final sentence groups Brazil, Germany and Korea together without explaining their different figures. The comparison between Japan and India is also difficult to follow because the figures are presented in reverse order within the sentence. Organise the body into clearer comparisons—for example, the leading countries and then the lower group—and use linking words only where they express a genuine relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related terms, including “generation,” “utilization,” “produced,” “consumed” and “generated,” so the reader can understand the topic and the intended comparisons. However, some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “yield” for electricity production, “very closed” for similar figures, and “top least countries.” Spelling and capitalisation errors in “china,” “united state” and “farance” also reduce precision. Some repetition of “produced” and “consumed” could be avoided with accurate alternatives such as “output” and “consumption.” Aim for natural collocations and check country names and technical terms carefully; this would make the comparisons clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison joined with “while” and sentences beginning with “Moreover” and “Similarly.” The main information is usually understandable, but errors in agreement, articles and sentence construction recur. For example, “china and united states was top nations” needs plural agreement and an article, while “japan and india was” also requires a plural verb. “India generated … meanwhile japan generated…” joins two complete ideas without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. There are also inconsistent tense forms, as in “remained” alongside “yield.” Practise accurate plural subjects, past-tense reporting and punctuation between clauses, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
