IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart depicts the production and usage of electricity for the ten countries in the world in 2014. Units of production and consumption are measured in the billion kilowatt hours.
Overall, it can be seen that China remained the highest in terms of production and consumption, whereas the USA remained second to China. The production of electricity remained high than the consumption in the countries except Germany where consumption overtook production and the Republic of Korea experienced the lowest in both terms.
China and the United States produced 5398 and 4099 billion kWh electricity while their consumption was 5322 and 3866 billion kWh respectively which are the highest in 2014. Russia manufactured 1057 and used 1038 of electricity. Japan, India and Canada remained below 1000 and above at around 500 billion kWh in terms of production and consumption respectively.
Germany showed the exceptional trend with 526.6 production and 582.5 consumption with the Korea at lowest at 485 at 499.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You provide a clear overview of the main pattern: China and the United States lead both measures, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The figures for the two leading countries and Russia are accurate, and you identify Korea as the lowest producer. This covers the task’s central features, while the overview and comparisons are not yet fully developed. The statement that Japan, India and Canada were “below 1000 and above at around 500” is unclear and groups countries whose figures differ substantially, especially India. Also, the final comparison gives Korea’s production as 485 and consumption as 499, although its consumption was 449.5. Include more precise comparisons for the middle-ranked countries and check each reported figure.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a sensible four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of supporting figures. The progression from the leading countries to the remaining countries is generally easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “whereas” help signal comparisons. However, the grouping in “Japan, India and Canada remained below 1000 and above at around 500” makes the relationship among those figures difficult to interpret. The final sentence also combines Germany and Korea without clearly separating their production and consumption values. To strengthen progression, organise the data into clear groups and use explicit comparisons, such as noting that India’s consumption was notably lower than its production.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” “exceptional trend,” and “overtook.” These choices make the chart’s main comparisons understandable, and there is some variation in how you describe the data. At times, however, word choice or collocation is imprecise: “usage of electricity” is less suitable than “consumption,” “remained high than” is not a natural comparison, and “manufactured” is an awkward choice for electricity generation. The phrase “at lowest” is also unclear. Aim for precise, conventional chart language and avoid using synonyms that do not fit the context; this will make the comparisons sound more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause with “whereas” and a relative clause in “which are the highest.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions limit accuracy. For example, “The production of electricity remained high than the consumption” has an incorrect comparative structure; use “was higher than.” In “Japan, India and Canada remained below 1000 and above at around 500,” the relationship between the two comparisons is not grammatically clear. The final sentence also lacks a clear grammatical link between the figures and the countries. Practise accurate comparative forms and build complete sentences that clearly identify what each number measures.
