Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main leaders and provide several figures, including China’s and the United States’ production and consumption, which gives the reader a useful starting point. However, the overview is incomplete and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. China’s production was highest, not its consumption alone, and the claim that Russia, India and Japan each had about one-fifth of China’s figures does not fit the data: Russia was closer to one-fifth, while Japan and India were lower. The grouped claim about Germany, Brazil, France and Canada also reverses the pattern: Germany consumed more than it produced, whereas the other three produced more than they consumed. Select the clearest overall patterns and support them with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of supporting details. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Meanwhile” help signal shifts between points. The progression is generally understandable, but the overview mixes rankings with a vague comparison among the lower-ranked countries, and the final paragraph groups four countries without explaining their different patterns. This makes some references and comparisons difficult to follow. Organise the details by meaningful contrasts—for example, the two leading countries, then the remaining countries—and use each paragraph to develop one clear comparison. This would make the progression more consistent and cohesion less dependent on basic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranked,” “utilised,” and “billion kWh,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some variation in how you refer to electricity, such as “electrical energy.” However, a few choices are imprecise or unnatural: “tops the list of electricity consumption” is less direct than “had the highest consumption,” and “have approximately 1/5 of China's energy usage and production” is unclear. “Average energy” is also not an accurate description of the figures being compared. To strengthen precision, use standard chart language such as “generated,” “consumed,” “stood at,” and “roughly one-fifth of China’s figures,” ensuring the comparison matches the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concessive clause beginning “Although” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Most sentences communicate their main meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “China was the highest by 5,398 and 5,322,” the comparison structure is faulty; write that production and consumption “stood at” those figures. In “Russia, India and Japan have approximately,” the present-tense verb does not fit the past-year reporting, and “the energy consumption and production … was” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “The energy” after a comma. Check tense consistency, agreement with compound subjects, and sentence punctuation when revising.
