IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates the production of electricity and consumption as well in 2014. There are top 10 countries that produce and consume their elecricity.
Last talk about the conutry first which produce much electricity about 5398kWh and consume about 5322kWh electricity which is China. We all knew that China is well deveolped country in all over the world. They have too much facilities than other countries. They have dams for storing water from which they produce electricity.Howevr,if we see that Korea they can not produce or consume much elecricity than other well developed contries. They can only produce 485.1kWh and consume only 449.5kWh electricity.
On the other hand,at the ranking no.2 is America they also has facilities for producing elecricity for their country and supply of electricity. They produce 4099kWh in everyday and consume 3866kWh.In Russia the production or consumption of electricity is probably same which is 1057kWh and consumption is about same as well like 1038kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the chart’s subject and reports several relevant figures, including China’s leading production and consumption and the lower figures for Korea. It also compares the United States with Russia. However, the task is addressed only partially: there is no clear overview of the main pattern across the ten countries, and most countries are omitted. The explanation about China’s dams and development is not shown by the chart, so it takes space from reporting the data. Some units are also misstated: the figures are in billion kWh, not simply kWh, and the United States figure is not described as a daily amount. Focus on the overall ranking and notable exceptions, such as Germany consuming more than it produces.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has some basic organisation: it begins by introducing the chart and then discusses China and Korea before moving to the United States and Russia. However, the progression is limited and the comparisons do not form a clear, complete summary. The opening phrase “Last talk about the conutry first” is difficult to follow, and “On the other hand” does not introduce a clear contrast with the preceding point. Ideas about countries’ facilities interrupt the sequence of data reporting. Use a concise overview followed by logically grouped comparisons, and connect each paragraph’s figures to a clear point about relative production and consumption.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic topic, with relevant terms such as “production,” “consume,” “ranking,” and “facilities.” However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or repetitive, including “produce much electricity,” “too much facilities,” and repeated use of “electricity.” Spelling errors such as “elecricity,” “conutry,” and “deveolped” are noticeable and reduce precision. Some expressions also sound conversational or unsupported for an academic chart report, particularly “We all knew” and “Last talk about.” Aim for precise reporting language and accurate collocations, such as “generated the most electricity” and “recorded the lowest consumption.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses mostly simple sentence patterns, with a few attempts to combine ideas using “which” and “if.” Errors occur often enough to make some sentences awkward, although the main figures and comparisons remain understandable. Examples include “There are top 10 countries,” “they also has facilities,” and “which is 1057kWh and consumption is about same as well,” where articles, agreement, and sentence construction need attention. The sentence beginning “Last talk about” is also incomplete as a grammatical construction. Practise forming complete subject–verb sentences and checking agreement, articles, and punctuation; for example, “The United States ranked second, producing 4,099 billion kWh and consuming 3,866 billion kWh.”
