IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The bar chart illustrates that these top ten countries are consuming the most electricity as it dosent matter how big the country is and how much population is over there it totally depends on where the electricity is more needed for example. In China there is most of electronics factories and they make more electronics items than anywhere else so they are leading the chart.
As i said that China is leading in the prodution and consumption with USA being a thousand short in production of electricity also they are almost consuming full that they made like China. Than there is a massive fall in other countries as Russia took the 3rd spot being far behind from China and USA with generating over just 1000 for production amd manily using it all with surprisingly Japan came in 4th the smaller country, But quiet uses electricity alot behind it are India, Canada, France with production of 871 in India to 561 in France and they all consume there makings too. After that comes the bottom of the list with Brazil, Germany, South korea with Gremany acually consuming more than they produce is a shocking fact to me.
Consumption and production matters on which country is acually have more factories or better GDP in my opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main leaders and the sharp drop after China and the United States, and you report several relevant comparisons, including Russia’s production of just over 1,000 and Germany’s higher consumption than production. However, the response only partly fulfils the chart-summary task because the overview is mixed with unsupported explanations and personal opinion. Claims that China leads because it has more electronics factories, or that electricity use depends on factories or GDP, are not shown by the chart. Some figures and comparisons are also imprecise: the United States is about 1,300 billion kWh below China in production, not 1,000, and the countries do not all consume what they produce. Focus on the chart’s overall patterns and support them with accurate comparisons rather than speculation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation: the response moves from an opening statement to comparisons among the leading and lower-ranked countries, then ends with a concluding comment. However, the progression is not consistently clear because the opening combines a general claim with an explanation about China, while the final opinion does not summarise the chart. Long sentences joined by words such as “Than,” “also,” and “with” make several comparisons difficult to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “After that comes the bottom of the list” contains multiple countries and Germany’s exception without clear separation. Use distinct paragraphs for the overview and key details, and organise comparisons into clear groups. More precise linking and sentence boundaries would make the information easier to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “leading,” “spot,” and “generating,” so the reader can generally understand the topic. However, the range is limited and several choices are informal, vague, or inaccurately collocated for an academic report. Phrases such as “uses electricity alot,” “consume there makings,” and “a shocking fact to me” do not describe the data precisely or maintain an appropriate report style. Spelling errors, including “prodution,” “amd,” and “Gremany,” are also noticeable and sometimes slow the reader. Aim for accurate terms such as “electricity consumption,” “output,” and “exceeded production,” and check spelling carefully. Avoid conversational reactions and use neutral language to report comparisons.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences and comparisons, but the structures are often faulty, and errors recur throughout. For example, “these top ten countries are consuming” is an awkward construction for describing a chart, while “it totally depends on where the electricity is more needed” has unclear clause structure. There are also errors in agreement and sentence formation, as in “which country is acually have more factories,” and punctuation problems where several independent ideas are joined in one sentence. Capitalisation is inconsistent, including “As i said.” These issues sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. Build more reliable control with short, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses and comparisons, checking verb forms, agreement, and punctuation.
