IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Comparison between consumption and production of electricity in a country is important for its economic stability. So lets look at the diiference between production and consumption of electricity in different countries. Starting off with China, the difference isn't that huge which is also the the case for united states. This difference is also very low in russia and japan but they produce and consume way too lesss electricity as compared to china and USA. India is 5th in the list for electricity consumption and it also shows a comparitively major difference between its production and consumption than other top ranked countries.India is followed by france, brazil and germany. However , the difference beween the two quantities isnt that huge in these countries. Moreover we can see that most of the electricity consumed in these countries is produced within the country. In last place we have the Korean Republic, which also demonstrates a very minor difference between production and consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several relevant comparisons, including China and the United States as the leading countries and the relatively small production–consumption gaps in Russia and Japan. You also note that India’s gap is comparatively large and that Germany is an exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. However, the response does not give any figures, and its overview is incomplete: it does not clearly summarise the enormous lead of China and the US over the remaining countries or report that Germany’s consumption exceeds its production. The claim that India has a major difference is also not well supported against the data, since Germany has the largest gap in the opposite direction. Select key figures and make the main patterns more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response moves through the countries in a broadly understandable order, from China and the United States to the lower-ranked countries, and linking phrases such as “Starting off,” “However,” and “Moreover” help signal relationships. Nevertheless, it is presented as one continuous paragraph and lacks a clear overview followed by organised supporting details. The repeated focus on whether the difference is “huge” or “very low” creates a list-like progression rather than a developed comparison. Some transitions are awkward, and the reference in “these countries” is not fully precise. Group the two leading countries, the middle-ranking group, and the lower-ranking countries, and use a separate overview to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “difference,” and “economic stability,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated descriptions of the gap as “not that huge,” “very low,” or “very minor.” “Way too less electricity” is an inaccurate and informal collocation, while “top ranked countries” does not clearly describe the figures being compared. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “diiference,” “lesss,” “comparitively,” and “beween.” Use more precise terms such as “output,” “usage,” and “the gap,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including the contrast in “However, the difference…” and the longer sentence beginning “India is 5th…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but control is uneven. The opening uses an informal imperative construction (“So lets look”), and the sentence about India and the countries that follow runs together without a space after the full stop. There are also punctuation and capitalisation problems, such as “However ,” and lower-case “united states,” “russia,” and “japan.” The sentence “India is followed by france, brazil and germany” is grammatically possible but does not clearly connect to the comparison being made. Practise accurate sentence boundaries and use a wider range of controlled comparison structures.
