Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares between the production and consumption of electric power among top ten countries throughout the year 2014.

Overall, China remained on top for both cases. However all the other countries had no chance in front of China except United states in both perspective of using electricity.

China ranked first with 5398 billion kWh electricity in production and also dominated in consumption of electricity with 5322 billion kWh. Similar pattern observed in case of United States for the production and consumption are 4099 billion kWh and 3866 billion kWh respectively.

The rest of the countries figure were below than 1500 billion kWh. which distinguished China and United States from the rest of the countries. Russia had secured third position and the figures almost same. Unlike other countries Germany consumed more electricity than production. Korea, Rep. being the the last in the list with the number 485.1 kWh and 449.5 kWh respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern clearly: China leads both measures, the United States is second, and the remaining countries are below 1,500 billion kWh. The figures for China and the United States are accurate, and you also note Russia’s third place and Germany’s unusual pattern of consuming more than it produces. This covers the key features, but some comparisons are only briefly stated. For example, “the figures almost same” for Russia would be stronger with the actual values, and the overview’s claim that other countries had “no chance” is vague rather than a precise comparison. Also clarify that the United States is far ahead of the other countries, rather than suggesting it is close to China. More selective numerical comparisons would develop the report further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs presenting the leading countries and the remaining figures. The progression from China and the United States to the other countries is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “Unlike” help signal relationships. However, some connections are awkward or unclear. “However all the other countries had no chance in front of China” does not express the intended comparison precisely, while “The rest of the countries figure were below than 1500” is difficult to connect smoothly to the following sentence. The final paragraph also combines several separate comparisons in a compressed way. Use clearer topic sentences and link each comparison explicitly to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a chart, including “ranked first,” “dominated,” “third position,” and “consumed more electricity than production.” These choices communicate the main comparisons, and the range is adequate for the task. However, several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “compares between,” “had no chance in front of,” and “in both perspective of using electricity.” “Electric power” is understandable, but “electricity” is the more natural term here. There are also word-form and collocation problems in “the rest of the countries figure” and “below than.” Aim for standard chart-reporting phrases such as “compares,” “by a wide margin,” and “the figures for the remaining countries.” This will make your meaning more precise and fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Unlike other countries Germany consumed more electricity than production.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “The bar chart compares between” uses an incorrect construction, and “Similar pattern observed” is missing an article and a verb form. In “The rest of the countries figure were below than 1500 billion kWh,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the sentence boundary before “which” is incorrect. The phrase “Korea, Rep. being the the last” is also an incomplete construction with a repeated article. Check sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
