IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Given is a bar graph illustrating the production and consumption of electricity in top ten countries in 2014.
Overall, the production of electricity was higher than the usage in all countries except in Germany. In China and United States showed the marked increase in both production and usage than in the other countries of electricity while Korea Republic showed the leaset in both categories.
Firstly, China had remarkable increament of both categories and the production was higher than usage by 76 billion kWh. The second highest country of both categories was United States and the production of electricity was less than China by 1299 billion kWh. Furthermore in Russia, both usage and production were nearly the same.
Furthermore, in Germany, they used electricity than they generate it. The production was lesser than consumption by 55.9 billion kWh. In Brazil and Germany electric current generation was nearly the same, but in Brazil usage was lesser than Germany. In Japan, India, and Canada had mild improvement in production of electricity than consumption.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: production exceeded consumption in every listed country except Germany, and China and the United States were far ahead of the rest. Several figures are also reported correctly, including China’s 76-billion-kWh surplus and Germany’s 55.9-billion-kWh excess consumption. However, some comparisons are unclear or incomplete. For example, “China … had remarkable increament” does not specify what increased, and the comparison that the United States was below China by 1,299 billion kWh refers only to production, although the sentence mentions both categories. The final paragraph groups Japan, India and Canada without giving useful figures, and the claim about Brazil and Germany is difficult to interpret. Develop these comparisons more precisely and include a clearer overview of the scale differences.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of comparisons. The sequence from the largest producers to selected lower-ranking countries is generally understandable, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Firstly,” and “Furthermore” help signal movement between points. However, the linking is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Furthermore.” Some connections between ideas are also unclear: the sentence about Brazil and Germany combines a comparison of production with one of consumption without explaining the relationship, while “In Japan, India, and Canada had…” does not connect grammatically to the preceding discussion. Use paragraphing to group countries by meaningful patterns and make each comparison explicit, rather than relying mainly on transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant task vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “categories,” and “billion kWh,” and you attempt more varied expressions such as “remarkable” and “nearly the same.” This gives the report an adequate range for describing the chart. However, several spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision: “increament” and “leaset” are misspelled, “usage” is less suitable than “consumption” in this formal report, and “mild improvement” does not accurately describe a difference between two figures. “Electric current generation” is also an awkward substitute for electricity production. Aim for consistent, accurate chart language, such as “output,” “consumption,” “exceeded,” and “was marginally higher,” and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, and the main comparisons are usually understandable. For instance, the overview uses a contrast clause to distinguish Germany from the other countries. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “In China and United States showed…” lacks a clear subject and has an article omission; “In Japan, India, and Canada had…” has the same faulty sentence pattern. In “they used electricity than they generate it,” the comparison structure and verb form are incomplete, while “In Brazil and Germany electric current generation was…” needs clearer sentence framing and punctuation. These errors do not generally prevent the reader from understanding your points, but they limit control. Practise complete subject–verb clauses and accurate comparative structures, such as “consumption was higher than production.”
