The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar graph illustrates the power production and consumption by top ten nations in the year 2014.
Overall, China was the highest producer and consumer of electricity in 2014, followed by United states on second and Russia on the third. Korea remained by far the smallest in both consumption and production of energy source in the list.
Fisrtly, China produced 5398 kwh electricity in the year 2014 which was higher than that its consumption of 5322 kwh. USA produced roughly 1300 kwh lesser electricity as compared to China, but the USA was also self-sufficient in its

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China leads both measures, while Korea is lowest in production and consumption. The figures for China are accurate, and the comparison with the United States is broadly relevant. However, the report stops before covering most of the countries and gives no meaningful account of the lower-ranked nations or the notable exception of Germany, where consumption exceeds production. The unfinished sentence about the USA also leaves a comparison incomplete. The response addresses the task only partially, and it is 54 words below the required minimum. To improve, complete the report with key comparisons across the remaining countries and ensure every sentence is finished.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and the beginning of a detail paragraph. The overview also groups the leading countries and the smallest country, which gives the reader a basic direction. However, the progression is cut short, and the final sentence ends at “self-sufficient in its,” leaving the comparison unresolved. There is no developed sequence for presenting the remaining figures, so the report does not form a complete account. The linking words “Overall” and “Firstly” are appropriate but insufficient on their own to connect a full set of comparisons. Use separate, logically ordered detail paragraphs and finish each comparison before moving to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” and “smallest,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There is some variation in how you describe the data, such as “power production” and “electricity,” but several choices are imprecise or awkward: “energy source” does not fit naturally here, and “higher than that its consumption” is not a clear comparison. Spelling and capitalisation also need attention, including “Fisrtly” and “United states.” The vocabulary is adequate for identifying the main topic, but the range and control are limited. Prefer precise terms such as “electricity generation” and “consumed,” and check spelling and collocations during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple statements and a more complex comparison, as in “China produced … which was higher than…,” and the main message is usually recoverable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “higher than that its consumption,” the comparison structure is faulty; “higher than its consumption” would be clearer. “Followed by United states on second and Russia on the third” also has problems with article use and ordinal phrasing. The final sentence is incomplete, so it cannot communicate the intended relationship. Most of the response relies on short, basic structures, with little evidence of controlled variety. Practise accurate comparison patterns and check that every sentence has a complete clause and a clear ending.
