IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Given is a bar graph illustrating the production and consumption of the electricity of the top ten countries in 2014, in billion kWh.
Overall, the highest and the least production and the consumption were in China and the Korea Republic respectively. Many countries had high production of electricity than the consumption.
The highest amount of electricity was generated and used in China, with 5,398 billion kWh and 5,322 billion kWh respectively. The second highest country in both categories was United States and it showed as 4,099 billion kWh in production and 3,866 billion kWh in consumption. Russia also had a significantly high amount of electric current generation and usage and Japan had lower amount in both categories compared to Russia. India showed mild increase in production than in the consumption by 172.2 billion kWh. Furthermore Canada also had a significant difference between two categories by 119billion kWh.
Moreover, France, Brazil and Korea showed significantly lower numbers of production and consumption in 2014. France and Brazil had nearly the same amount on electric current generation and usage, with 561.2 billion kWh usage in the France and 530.7 billion kWh in the Brazil. The least production of 485.1 billion kWh and the least usage of 449.5 billion kWh could be shown in Korea. In contrast, Germany had more consumption than the production. The consumption was higher by 55.9 billion kWh compared to the production.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview by identifying China as the leader and Korea as the lowest producer and consumer, and you note the broad pattern that production exceeds consumption in most countries. The response also selects useful comparisons, including the United States, India and Canada, and correctly identifies Germany as the exception where consumption is higher. This covers the main features and supports them with relevant figures. However, some details are imprecise: you describe France, Brazil and Korea together as having “significantly lower numbers,” without comparing their positions with Germany or Korea’s figures, and the France/Brazil sentence gives production values as usage. More precise reporting of both series for these countries would make the account more consistently developed and avoid over-generalisation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-part structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of supporting comparisons. The progression from the leading countries to the lower-ranked group is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Furthermore” and “In contrast” help signal relationships. This is a coherent arrangement, though cohesion is not always fully controlled. “Moreover” introduces another group without a particularly clear contrast, and the final paragraph moves from France and Brazil to Korea and then Germany, making the comparison less systematic. Grouping countries by similar patterns and using clearer references to production and consumption would strengthen the flow and make the links between figures more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing the chart, including “generated,” “significantly,” “difference” and “in contrast.” These choices communicate the main comparisons, and the meaning remains clear. However, some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “the consumption of the electricity,” “electric current generation and usage,” and “showed mild increase.” Repetition of “amount” and “high/ lower” also limits flexibility. In addition, “significantly lower” is not a precise description of the countries’ relative figures. Aim for natural chart language such as “electricity production,” “consumption,” “rose by,” and “the figures were lower,” while choosing comparisons that accurately reflect the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “with” and comparisons introduced by “while” or “in contrast.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obscure the intended meaning. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “the highest and the least production and the consumption were” has an awkward and inconsistent structure, while “Many countries had high production … than the consumption” needs a comparative form such as “higher production than consumption.” Articles and prepositions are also sometimes inaccurate, as in “in the France” and “difference between two categories.” Check agreement, comparative constructions and article use, and simplify sentences when needed to maintain control.
