IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given figure is showing the data about different countries for the production and consumption of electricity in the year 2014 there are different ranges of several countries that how much amount of electricity they produce and consume every estate have their own spends few of them need more electricity few generate more
First of all, China has the greatest rank in production and consumption as compared to all other countries. In 2014 China creates 5,398 billion kWh and also in that year they use 5,322 billion kWh this is such a vast amount of electricity. Moreover, United states is on second rank in all those nations it produce 4,099 billion kWh in one year and it also consume 3,866 billion kWh of electrical energy.
Secondly, All the other countries in which the major countries that are the super power of the world all of them does not cross 1,100 billion kWh in that year.
Overall, In this bar chart there is a comparison and in this we are clearly seeing that in all of that countries the production is higher than the consumption except that one country that is Germany.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s main leaders accurately, giving the correct production and consumption figures for China and the United States. Your overview also captures the key pattern that production exceeds consumption in every listed country except Germany. However, the comparison of the remaining countries is under-developed: saying they “do not cross 1,100 billion kWh” is broad and does not show how Russia, Japan and India compare with the lower-producing nations. The phrase “major countries that are the super power” is also unclear and not a useful chart feature. To strengthen the response, select a few representative figures or comparisons from the middle and lower ranks, and make the overview more precise about the large gap between the top two countries and the rest.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph about China and the United States, a brief statement about the other countries, and a concluding overview. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Moreover,” and “Overall” help signal movement between points. However, progression is limited because the middle paragraph gives only a general statement rather than developing comparisons, and the final overview repeats the production-versus-consumption pattern without adding detail. Some linking is mechanical, while the opening sentence runs several ideas together, making the relationships between them difficult to follow. Group the figures into clear comparisons—for example, the two leading countries, the mid-ranking group, and Germany—and use references that clearly connect each sentence to the relevant data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “billion kWh,” and “comparison,” so the subject is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary wording, such as “creates” and “use” for electricity figures. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for an academic chart description: “greatest rank,” “they use,” “super power,” and “their own spends” do not express the intended comparisons clearly. Repetition of “electricity” and “countries” also limits range. Aim for accurate reporting verbs and comparison language, such as “generated,” “consumed,” “ranked second,” and “substantially higher.” More precise vocabulary would make the data easier to interpret and give the response a more consistently formal tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the meaning of the main figures is usually recoverable. However, control is uneven, particularly in the opening, which joins several clauses without clear sentence boundaries: “The given figure is showing … in the year 2014 there are different ranges…” Verb forms and agreement also need attention, as in “it produce” and “it also consume,” while “all of them does not cross” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, including “Secondly, All” and “Overall, In.” Use shorter, complete sentences when presenting figures, and check that each subject matches its verb. A wider range of accurately controlled sentence patterns would make the comparisons clearer.
