IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the amount of electricity generation and usage in top ten rank countries in 2014. Overall, it is apparent that the highest amount of electricity production and consumption was in China and the lowest in the Korea Republic in 2014. The electricity measured in billion kWh.

Firstly, China was a first country in which electricity supply and demand was higher as compared to other countries which was 5,398 and 5,322 billion kWh respectively, while United states was a second country in which electricity production was 4,099 billion kWh and demand was 3,866 billion kWh. Furthermore, there was a slight difference between electricity production and consumption in Russia, while Japan was fourth large country in energy generation was 936.2 billion kWh and consumption was 856.7 billion kWh in 2014. By comparison that, electricity production in India and Canada was considerably higher than demand of these countries.

To begin with, energy demand and supply of France and Brazil was quite similar in 2014. In contrast, the electricity consumption was higher than production in Germany which was 582.5 billion kWh and 526.6 billion kWh. The Korea Republic was on the ten number in electricity provision and utilization which was 485.1 billion kWh and 449.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads both production and consumption, while Korea is among the lowest, and you include several relevant figures for China, the United States, Russia and Japan. The comparison of Germany is also correctly reported, including the fact that consumption exceeds production there. This covers the task well, though some features are less fully developed: the overview could state more clearly that China and the US are far ahead of the other countries, and the comparisons for India, Canada, France and Brazil are mostly general rather than supported with figures. Also, Korea is not the lowest in consumption, since Germany’s production is lower but its consumption is higher; specify that Korea has the lowest production and near-lowest consumption. More precise selection and comparison would strengthen the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by two paragraphs covering groups of countries, and the information is generally understandable. However, progression is not consistently clear: “Firstly” and “To begin with” both introduce details, while “By comparison that” is an awkward transition and does not clearly signal the relationship between the points. The grouping of countries also feels somewhat arbitrary, and the final paragraph moves from France and Brazil to Germany and Korea without a clear organising principle. Use a more purposeful sequence, such as comparing the two leading countries first and then grouping the remaining countries by similar levels or notable differences. Clearer links between comparisons and more precise referencing would make cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “generation,” “consumption,” “demand,” “supply” and “considerably higher,” so the main comparisons are communicated. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “it is apparent” and “in contrast.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “top ten rank countries,” “a first country,” “fourth large country,” and “electricity provision and utilization” do not sound natural in this context. Repetition of “country” and “electricity” also limits flexibility. Prefer standard chart language such as “the leading country,” “ranked fourth,” “electricity production,” and “consumption.” These refinements would make the vocabulary more precise while retaining the clear meaning of your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons joined with “while” and “which,” and most of the intended meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “China was a first country” needs a different article and structure, while “supply and demand was higher” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “the electricity measured in billion kWh,” the sentence lacks a finite verb, and “By comparison that” is not a correctly formed linking phrase. There are also inconsistent article and number patterns in phrases such as “the ten number.” Review these structures and aim for complete, controlled sentences; greater accuracy across the complex comparisons would improve the overall grammatical control.
