IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart illustrates the production and overall consumption of electricity in ten countries around the world in year 2014. Electricity is measured in billion kWh.

Overall, it can be seen that China's electricity consumption and production was the highest among all the countries. Meanwhile, Korea generated and used the least units of electricity.

To begin with, China generated 5398kWh of electricity in 2014, while utilized 5322kWh of electricity. Meanwhile, United States and Russia produced 4099kWh and 1057kWh of electricity respectively, while their consuption was 3866kWh and 1038kWh respectively. However, Japan and india electricity production was 936.2kWh and 871kWh respectively, while they used 856.7kWh and 698.8kWh of electricity.

On the other hand, Canada and France produced 618.9kWh and 561.2kWh of electricity , while Canada's electricity consumption was 499.9kWh and France used 462.9kWh of electricity. Brazil and Germany produced 530.7kWh and 526.6kWh of electricity, while they utilized 455.8kWh and 582.5 respectively. This means that Germany is the only country whose electricity consumption is more than its production. Furthermore, Korea produced 485.1kWh of electricity while utiized 449.5kWh of it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers the chart’s main subject and gives a clear overview: China leads both measures, while Korea is lowest in production and consumption. It also reports figures for all ten countries, and the comparisons are generally accurate, including the important exception that Germany consumed more electricity than it produced. This breadth supports a strong response to the task. However, the overview could identify the large gap between China and the other countries, and the body mostly lists figures rather than selecting and highlighting the most significant patterns. Some details are less fully expressed—for example, the units are repeatedly written as “kWh” rather than billion kWh. A more selective overview and clearer emphasis on key contrasts would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information is arranged in a coherent sequence, with an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs. Grouping China, the United States and Russia before the remaining countries gives the reader a workable progression, and linking phrases such as “Meanwhile,” “On the other hand” and “Furthermore” help connect comparisons. The organisation is generally clear, though the transitions sometimes feel mechanical or do not express a meaningful contrast: “On the other hand” introduces another set of figures rather than a clear opposing point. The repeated country-by-country listing also limits the sense of synthesis. To strengthen progression, group countries by a shared feature, such as the leading producers and the lower-output group, and use fewer, more precise linking expressions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for describing the chart, and the writer uses relevant terms such as “production,” “consumption,” “generated” and “utilized.” Some variation in reporting verbs helps avoid complete repetition. However, the range is not consistently precise or natural: “overall consumption” is unnecessary, and “used the least units of electricity” is awkward. There are also spelling errors, including “consuption” and “utiized,” and the repeated phrase “of electricity” makes the description less concise. Use standard chart language and check spelling carefully; terms such as “consumed,” “output” and “the lowest figures” would make comparisons more fluent and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while” and “whose,” and most comparisons remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the overview, “China’s electricity consumption and production was” has a plural subject and should take “were.” The opening phrase “in year 2014” needs an article (“in the year 2014”), while “Japan and india electricity production was” lacks possessive forms and has an agreement problem. In “Germany produced 526.6kWh … while they utilized 582.5,” the final figure lacks its unit, and the pronoun reference is unclear. Review agreement, articles and possessive constructions, and aim for accurate complex sentences rather than relying on repeated “while” clauses.
