IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The following chart illustrates the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014 . The lighter shade on the bar graph refers to the consumption and the darker one refers to the production of electricity. The figures represent billion kWh.

Overall, most amount of electricity which is produced in a certain country is also used within that country as well. China is leading the graph by producing 5,398 kWh and Korea is at the top 10th position producing 485.1 kWh.

In detail to the production and consumption, China is consuming 5,322 kWh out of 5,398 kWh. Meaning almost all of the electricity that is produced is also utilized by China as well. Similarly, Russia, Japan and Korea used most of the electrical output within their country in 2014.

On the other hand, United States, India, Canada, France and Brazil kept their consumption 10% less than their production in 2014. Meanwhile, Germany utilized 582.5 kWh and produced 526.6 kWh. Meaning roughly around 55 kWh would had been imported from other countries.

In conclusion, the utilization of electricity in 9 countries is less than the production of it and Germany is the only country where the consumption of power is more than the production of it for the year 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the United States lead both measures, and Germany is the only country whose consumption exceeds production. The overview also notes that production and consumption are close in most countries, while the China and Germany figures provide useful support. This covers the task and includes relevant comparisons. However, some details are less fully developed: the claim that five countries kept consumption “10% less” is an over-generalisation, since the gaps vary, and the response gives little comparison of the middle-ranked countries. Also, the figures should be described as billion kWh, not simply kWh. A more precise overview and a few selected comparisons across the ranking would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, overview, detail paragraphs and conclusion, and its progression from the overall pattern to country-specific figures is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the report. The main limitation is that some connections feel mechanical or repetitive: “Meaning” begins two sentence fragments, and the conclusion largely repeats the overview rather than adding a final synthesis. The grouping of countries in the third paragraph is understandable, but the broad “10% less” claim makes the comparison less precise. Use complete sentences and organise the details around clear groups, such as countries with similar production and consumption and Germany as the exception.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “utilized,” “electrical output” and “imported.” These choices make the subject clear, and the response varies its wording rather than relying only on “electricity.” However, some expressions are awkward or imprecise, such as “most amount of electricity,” “top 10th position,” and “kept their consumption 10% less.” “Utilized” is also repeated, while “used” or “consumed” would often sound more natural in this context. Take care to use the unit consistently: the chart reports billion kWh, whereas the response often says only kWh. More accurate collocations and precise comparative language would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, for example “On the other hand, United States, India, Canada, France and Brazil kept their consumption 10% less than their production.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and sentence fragments persist. “Meaning almost all of the electricity…” and “Meaning roughly around 55 kWh…” are not complete sentences; connect these ideas to the preceding sentences or recast them with a subject and verb. There are also errors in “would had been imported” and the missing article in “United States.” Review modal verb forms (“would have been”) and article use with country names. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make the varied sentence forms more effective.
