IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the total number of electricity was produced and consumed in 2014 amongst the ten higher ranked countries.

Overall, it can be seen that almost every single given country produced more electricity than it consumed while only exception was Germany. The consumption and production of electricity in China and USA was the most than any other country. In the meanwhile Brazil, Germany and Korea sat in the last.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and give a relevant overview: China and the USA lead, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. However, the response reports no figures and gives little detail about the other countries, so the main features are only minimally covered. The statement that Brazil, Germany and Korea “sat in the last” is also imprecise: these countries are among the lower-ranked producers, but Germany’s consumption is higher than that of several countries. The response is substantially below the required 150 words, which leaves the comparisons and supporting information underdeveloped. Add selected figures—for example, China’s roughly 5,400 billion kWh production—and compare the leading countries with the lower group.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic, recognisable structure: an introductory sentence is followed by an overview beginning “Overall”. This helps the reader identify the topic and the main comparison. However, the response ends after the overview, with no organised detail paragraph or progression through the data. The linking phrases “while” and “In the meanwhile” attempt to connect ideas, but the latter does not clearly express the intended contrast, and the final sentence groups three countries without explaining their relative positions. Develop a clear sequence: introduce the chart, summarise the main patterns, then compare the leading and lower-producing countries using selected figures. This would make the organisation more complete and the connections between points clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “produced”, “consumed”, “countries” and “exception”, and the reader can understand the general topic. However, the range is limited, and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural: “the total number of electricity”, “ten higher ranked countries”, “was the most than any other country” and “sat in the last”. These choices make the overview less precise, particularly when describing rankings and quantities. Use standard collocations such as “amount of electricity”, “top ten countries”, “the highest figures” and “ranked among the lowest”. More precise language for comparing values—such as “slightly exceeded” or “far outstripped”—would also help you report the chart’s key differences clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a complex overview sentence with “while”, and the opening sentence communicates the chart’s general subject. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “the total number of electricity was produced and consumed”, the noun phrase and passive construction are not formed correctly; “almost every single given country produced more electricity than it consumed while only exception was Germany” is missing an article before “only exception”; and “China and USA was” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The response relies mainly on simple statements and does not show a wider range of accurate sentence patterns. Practise forming comparisons with correct subjects and verbs, for example, “China and the USA had the highest production and consumption figures,” and check articles and agreement when editing.
