IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the total number of electricity was produced and consumed in 2014 amongst the ten higher ranked countries.

Overall, it can be seen that almost every single given country produced more electricity than it consumed while only exception was Germany. The consumption and production of electricity in China and the USA were the most than any other country. In the meanwhile Brazil, Germany and Korea were at the bottom.

In 2014, the highest number of electricity production was recorded by China and it was 5398 billion kwh where their consumption was just over 5320 kwh. The USA produced 233 billion kwh more than the amount of consumption. The amount of electricity production and consumption in Russia was almost the same, more than one thousand billion kwh.

Japan, India, Canada, France experienced quite a same pattern where the production of electricity were higher in number than the consumption. The amount of electricity produced in Germany was 526.6 billion kwh which was not at sufficient level than the number of electricity were consumed. The lowest number of electricity production and consumption recorded in Korea in 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the USA lead both measures, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. You also include relevant figures for China, the USA and Russia, and note that Korea has the lowest production and consumption. This addresses the task, but some comparisons are underdeveloped or imprecise. For example, saying Brazil, Germany and Korea were “at the bottom” overlooks that Brazil and Germany had higher production than Korea, while Germany’s consumption was above its production and higher than several other countries. The statement that China’s consumption was “just over 5320 kwh” also omits “billion” and is less precise than the chart. Include a few more accurate comparisons across the lower-ranked countries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs of supporting details. The overview gives the reader a useful sense of the main contrasts, and the final paragraph groups several countries with a similar production-consumption pattern. However, progression within the detail paragraphs is sometimes loose. The shift from China to the USA and Russia, then to a broad list of countries, leaves some comparisons unexplained. Linking phrases such as “In the meanwhile” are not used naturally, and “at the bottom” is not clearly tied to a specific measure. Organise the details into clearer groups—for example, the two leading countries, the middle group, and the lower figures—and use precise references to connect each comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “produced,” “consumed,” “recorded,” “amount” and “pattern,” so the topic remains clear. There is also some attempt to vary expression rather than repeat the chart labels throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the ten higher ranked countries,” “the most than any other country,” “quite a same pattern” and “not at sufficient level.” These reduce precision, particularly when describing comparisons. “Electricity” is also repeated frequently where “output” or “consumption” could help. Aim for standard chart-reporting phrases and check word forms and spelling conventions, including consistent use of “kWh.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “while only exception was Germany” and a relative clause in “where the production … were higher.” The main comparisons are generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “the total number of electricity was produced,” where the noun phrase and passive construction do not fit together, and “the production … were higher,” where the subject requires a singular verb. Articles are also missing in “while only exception,” and the final sentence has an incomplete structure: “The lowest number … recorded.” Work on subject-verb agreement, articles and complete passive constructions. More accurate sentence patterns would make the data easier to follow.
