IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the information about the amount of electricity produced and comsumed by ten different countries in 2014, magerd in billion kWh.

Overall, China was the highest consumer and producer of electricity during the year while Korea Republic showed the lowest figure. Fortheremore, the countries had produced more electricity then they comsumed except Germany.

In 2014, China ranked first and produced 5,398 billion kWh electricity where they comsumed around 5,322 billion kWh. Then the US stood on the second position with 4,099 billion kWh electricity production and 3,866 billion kWh consumption.

Around 1057 billion kWh electricity produced by Russia while japan accounted to 936.2 billion kWh and they comsumed around 1038 billion kWh and 856.7 billion kWh respectively. The production and consumption figure in India was 871 billion kWh and 698.8, followed by Canada 618.9 billion kWh and 499.9 billion kWh whereas France around 561.2 billion kWh and 462.9 billion kWh. Brazil made 530.7 billion kWh electricity and Germany accouned to 526.6 while Brazil comsumed only 455.8 billion kWh but Gremany around 582.5 billion kWh. Finally Korea Republic produced around 485.1 billion kWh and comsumed around 449.5 billion kWh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China leads both measures, Korea has the lowest figures, and Germany is the exception to the general pattern of production exceeding consumption. The overview is relevant, and most reported figures match the chart, including the China, US, and Russia comparisons. This gives the response a solid account of the task, with some detail beyond a basic summary. However, coverage is not fully precise: the sentence about Russia and Japan makes the figures difficult to assign, and the final countries receive less clear comparison. Make the overview more analytical and present each country’s production and consumption as an unmistakable pair; this would develop the key features more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by details, moving broadly from the largest producers to the smaller ones. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Then,” “followed by,” and “Finally” help signal this progression. However, the long final body paragraph groups many countries together, making comparisons harder to follow. In particular, the Russia–Japan sentence and the Brazil–Germany sentence require rereading to identify which figures belong to which country. Some transitions also feel mechanical rather than showing the relationship between the data. Use shorter, clearly grouped sentences—perhaps one paragraph for the leading countries and another for the rest—and repeat country names where pronouns could be unclear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “produced,” “consumed,” “ranked first,” “accounted to,” and “figure,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe the data, but several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision: “magerd” appears to be an attempted form of “measured,” “comsumed” is repeatedly misspelled, and “accounted to” is not the natural collocation here. “Showed the lowest figure” is understandable but could be more specific about both measures. Aim for accurate, conventional reporting language such as “electricity generation,” “consumption,” and “stood at.” Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make your vocabulary more reliable and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast with “while” and a sequence using “whereas,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, some sentence structures are incomplete or awkwardly formed. For example, “Around 1057 billion kWh electricity produced by Russia” lacks a finite verb, while “where they consumed” does not fit smoothly after “produced … electricity.” The sentence combining Brazil and Germany also has unclear clause structure. There are some issues with articles, prepositions, and punctuation, and the long sentences make these harder to control. Build each comparison around a clear subject and verb—for example, “Russia produced…, while Japan generated…”—and check that every clause is grammatically complete.
