The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The bar graph illustrates the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.
Overall, China accounted highest production and consumption in the electricity rank first in all over the country, whereas USA was the second higher in both terms. Furthermore, the figures for the remaining countries were considerably lower. Another noticeable feature is that electricity production was higher than consumption in all over the countries.
Looking at the two leading countries, China generated approximately 5,398 in production billion kWh of electricity compared with 5,322 billion kWh consumed. Similarly, the United States accounted 4,099 in production billion kWh and 3,866 billion in consumption.
Regarding the other countries, Russia rank third producing 1,057 billion kWh and 1,038 billion kWh. Japan followed with production of 936.2 billion kWh, while its consumption was 856.7 billion kWh. Therefore, India occupied fifth position with 871 billion kWh in production and 698.8 billion kWh in consumption. Canada secure sixth ranked with figure of production 618.9 billion kWh and lower in consumption 499.9 billion kWh, whereas, France and Brazil contains 561.2, 530.7 billion kWh in production and 462.9, 455.8 billion kWh in consumptions. Consequently, Germany consume lower in production with 526.6 billion kWh and higher in consumption 582.5 respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a useful overview: China and the United States lead by a wide margin, and production generally exceeds consumption. Most reported figures match the chart, including the leading countries and the values for Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France and Brazil. However, the overview’s claim that production was higher in every country is inaccurate: Germany consumed 582.5 billion kWh, more than its production of 526.6. The final comparison also becomes unclear when you say Germany “consume lower in production.” Korea is omitted, and the ranking language is not consistently clear. To strengthen the response, qualify the general trend, explain Germany as the exception, and include Korea or another relevant comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to the two leading countries and then the remaining nations. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this broad organisation, and phrases such as “Looking at” and “Regarding” signal a change in focus. However, the progression within the final paragraph is crowded: several countries and pairs of figures are compressed into one long sentence, and “whereas” does not clearly connect the France/Brazil figures to the Germany comparison. “Therefore” and “Consequently” also imply relationships that are not really present. Use shorter, grouped comparisons—for example, Russia and Japan together, then the mid-ranking countries—and make each linking phrase express the actual relationship.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generated,” and “followed,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. There is some attempt to vary phrasing, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “accounted highest production,” “second higher,” “secure sixth ranked,” and “Germany consume lower in production.” “Electricity rank” is also not a natural way to describe the countries’ positions. These choices make parts of the report less precise, especially in the overview and final comparison. Prefer standard reporting expressions such as “recorded the highest output,” “ranked second,” and “consumption was higher than production.” Check that verbs and nouns fit the intended comparison.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, as in “whereas USA was the second higher…” and the comparisons introduced by “while” and “whereas.” However, errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include missing articles in “accounted highest production,” incorrect verb forms in “Russia rank third” and “Germany consume,” and agreement problems in “France and Brazil contains.” Some comparisons also lack a clear grammatical structure, as in “lower in consumption 499.9.” Practise building accurate comparison patterns: “Russia ranked third, producing…,” and “Germany’s consumption was higher than its production.” Use consistent past-tense verbs and check articles, agreement and sentence boundaries.
