Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and give a broad overview, correctly noting that China is highest and Korea is lowest in both measures. However, the report is largely general: it does not include any figures, and claims such as “other countries are extremely low” overlook the substantial gap between China and the United States and the much lower values for the remaining countries. The statement that three countries are above a thousand is unclear and does not accurately distinguish production from consumption; only China, the United States and Russia exceed that level in both. Germany is also an important exception, as consumption exceeds production there. The response is 147 words, three short of the 150-word minimum. Select key comparisons and support them with accurate data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, further comments and a concluding sentence. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, the body paragraphs do not develop a clear sequence of comparisons, and several points repeat the same general idea—for example, that some countries have “extremely low” figures while China and the United States are high. Linking words such as “However,” “Whereas” and “In conclusion” are present, but they do not consistently connect precise or contrasting information; “Whereas” begins a fragment-like statement. Organise the details by comparing the leading countries with the rest, then mention notable exceptions such as Germany. This would create clearer progression and make the links more meaningful.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use basic vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “production,” “consumption,” “countries” and “electricity,” so the general subject remains understandable. However, the range is narrow and repetitive: “extremely high,” “extremely low” and “some countries” recur without conveying specific differences. Some word combinations are unnatural or unclear, such as “above to thousand,” “less electricity” and “Japan are no more and no extremely less.” Spelling also slips in “consumtion,” and country naming and spacing are inconsistent in “Korea,Rep.” Use more precise chart language, such as “generated,” “used,” “highest,” “lowest” and “slightly exceeded,” and describe values or rankings rather than relying on vague intensifiers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response mainly uses short, simple statements, with a few attempts to connect ideas using “while,” “however” and “whereas.” This provides some sentence variety, but control is inconsistent. For example, “The bar chart provide” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Japan are” also uses the wrong verb form. The sentence beginning “In China production and consumption very high” lacks a verb, while “Whereas, Japan are…” is not a complete, well-formed contrast. Articles and punctuation are also uneven, including the comma after “Regarding” and inconsistent spacing around country names. Practise accurate simple comparisons first, then combine them into complete complex sentences—for example, using “while” to contrast production and consumption.
