IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The top ten countries with their production and consumption of electricity shows a trend of changes from top to bottom.

As we can see, China is at the top most ranking in both the production and consumption figures, followed by United States, which is not much less than China. United States and China has a slight change in production capacity. But, we can see the change in ratio in consumption area as China has more consumption ratio than United States as shown in the figures.

In following countries, we can see drop in figures from Russia onwards. As we use to place countries like Russia and Japan in the developed regions of the world, however, in this case we can see the figures do not match with our conceptions. These countries show the figures which are even less than the above two countries(U.S and China) in terms of production as well as in consumption.

However, we can see that there is one country that is Germany which is showing the figures of consumption more than the figures of production in electricity. It is quite surprising to see this difference as comapred to the other countries in the chart either above or below of that of Germany. All the other countries, irrespective of the changing figures from one another, showing that the consumption ratio is less than the production ratio which is quite justified in this case.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main ranking pattern: China and the United States lead both measures, and the figures fall substantially from Russia onwards. You also correctly notice Germany as the exception where consumption exceeds production. These are relevant features, but the response does not give a clear, data-based overview of the chart’s most important comparisons. For example, saying the US is “not much less” than China understates the sizeable gap, while “slight change in production capacity” is vague and does not explain the figures. The comments about Russia and Japan being developed regions are not useful chart analysis. To strengthen the response, report a few accurate values and compare the lower-ranked countries more precisely, including Germany’s unusual result.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally understandable sequence: it begins with the two leading countries, moves to the middle of the ranking, and ends with Germany and the remaining countries. Paragraphing also separates the main stages of the discussion. However, progression is sometimes weakened by unclear or mechanical links, such as “In following countries” and “However” introducing ideas that do not clearly contrast with the previous point. References such as “these countries” and “the above two countries” require the reader to infer exactly which countries are meant. The final sentence also combines several broad claims without a clear focus. Use more precise topic sentences and connect each comparison directly to the relevant countries and measures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “ranking,” and “figures,” so the topic remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “irrespective of” and “in terms of.” However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data: “top most ranking,” “consumption ratio,” and “change in ratio” do not accurately convey the quantities shown. “Surprising” and the reference to “our conceptions” add opinion rather than useful description. Spelling errors such as “comapred” are noticeable. Aim for precise terms such as “output,” “consumption levels,” “exceeded,” and “declined,” and avoid calling the values ratios when they are amounts of electricity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, for example, “However, we can see that there is one country…” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some errors in agreement and sentence construction remain, however. In the opening, the plural subject “countries” takes the singular verb “shows”; later, “United States and China has” should use a plural verb. The clause beginning “As we use to place countries…” is not grammatically integrated with the following clause, and “all the other countries … showing” lacks a finite verb. Articles and punctuation also need attention, as in “the top most ranking” and “countries(U.S and China).” Build shorter, controlled comparisons first, then add complex clauses accurately.
