The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the production and utilization of electricity in billion kWh unit of the world's top ten countries including China, USA, Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, and Korea in the year of 2014.

Overall, China was the largest producer and consumer of electric power, followed by USA. While, smalleset proportion of electric supply was generated and utilized by Korea republic. On the other hand, Germany showed reversed trend, where consumption was higher than its production.

China being at the top of the trend, generated 5,398 billion kWh power supply in the whole year of 2014, while 5,322 billion kWh was utilized by its inhabitants. Following it, 4,099 billion kWh electricity was produced and 3,866 billion kWh was utilized by the second largest producer, that is USA. In Russia, production and consumption were almost near to equal, and only 19 billion kWh electricity was saved. In other countries like Japan, Canada, France, Brazil, and Korea the same trend was witnessed, in which production rate was greater than its consumption, but reverse in case of Germany where consumption was greater than production. Here 526,6 billion kWh electricity was generated and582,5 billion kWh was used.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main pattern accurately: China and the USA lead both measures, Korea has the lowest figures, and Germany is the exception where consumption exceeds production. The overview is clear, and the exact figures for China, the USA, Russia and Germany are reported correctly. This meets the task well, with some features more fully covered than others. However, the body groups Japan, Canada, France, Brazil and Korea together without giving figures or distinguishing their relative levels, and India is omitted from the detailed comparison. Also, saying that 19 billion kWh was “saved” in Russia interprets the difference rather than simply reporting it. To strengthen the response further, include a few representative figures for the middle-ranking countries and describe the production-consumption gap neutrally.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a body paragraph that moves from the largest producers to other countries. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Following it” and “On the other hand” help signal the relationships between points. However, the final body sentence combines several countries and the Germany comparison, so the progression becomes compressed and some information is difficult to follow. “While” at the start of the overview is also left as a fragment before the next idea, and the transition from Russia to the grouped countries is abrupt. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, the two leading countries, then the middle group, then Germany—and use linking phrases only where they clarify the relationship.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “generated” and “utilized,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “showed reversed trend.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing a chart: “utilization of electricity,” “smalleset proportion,” “electric supply,” and “electricity was saved” do not express the data as naturally as standard reporting language. Spelling and formatting slips, including “smalleset,” “Korea republic,” and “526,6,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent terms such as “electricity consumption” and “output,” and use “was lower than” rather than interpreting a difference as electricity saved.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including the contrast in “where consumption was higher than its production” and the comparison beginning “While…”. Most of the intended meaning can be understood, but some errors in sentence construction and punctuation remain. “While, smalleset proportion…” is not a complete clause, and “China being at the top of the trend, generated…” uses an awkward introductory construction that separates the subject from its verb. In “526,6 billion kWh electricity was generated and582,5 billion kWh was used,” the missing spacing and article before “electricity” affect presentation and grammatical accuracy. Review sentence boundaries, use complete clauses after subordinating conjunctions, and check articles and punctuation when joining comparisons.
