IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the production and consumption of electricity of the top 10 countries of the world in 2014.

Overall, most of the countries maintain higher productivity than consumption except from germany.

China and the USA contribute to the most consumption and production to reach a production of nearly 10000 kw combined which is far greater than what the rest of the countries on the list combined have produced .

China overpasses usa's production and consumption by 1000 billion kw.

Despite the huge amount of electricity produced by those country, consumption remains nearly as big as the production for most of these counturies.

Russia maintains the third possesion with a little bit more than 1000 kw followed by japan ,india , canda ,france , brazil ,korea republic .

All of which are experiencing the same trend with a slight exceed of production except from germany where it has a debt of nearly 60 Billion KW .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main pattern that production is generally higher than consumption and correctly single out Germany as the exception. You also note the dominance of China and the United States and give a broad ranking of the other countries. However, several comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: China exceeds the United States by about 1,300 billion kWh in production and about 1,456 billion kWh in consumption, not 1,000 in both. The combined production of China and the US is about 9,500 billion kWh, rather than nearly 10,000, and the unit should be kWh, not kw. The report also gives few precise figures and does not clearly compare the lower-ranked countries. Select key values and state the overview more precisely to develop the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an overall statement, and then comparisons among the countries. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Despite,” and “followed by” help signal relationships. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several ideas are crowded into long sentences, and the list of countries in the final paragraph does not explain their relative values. The sentence beginning “China and the USA contribute…” combines a comparison with an unclear claim about the rest of the countries. Punctuation and spacing also make the text harder to follow. Organise the report into clear overview and detail paragraphs, and use separate sentences to present the largest figures and the remaining comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a chart, including “production,” “consumption,” “combined,” and “exceed,” and you attempt to vary your wording with “maintains” and “overpasses.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “productivity” does not mean electricity production here, “overpasses” is not the natural verb for comparing figures, and “debt” is unsuitable for Germany’s production-consumption difference. There are also spelling errors in “counturies,” “possesion,” and “canda,” while “kw” should be written as kWh. These issues sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to interpret. Use standard chart language and check spelling and units carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Despite the huge amount of electricity produced…” and the clause beginning “where it has…”. However, grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes obscure the relationships between ideas. For example, “most of the countries maintain higher productivity than consumption except from germany” has an awkward comparison structure, while “China overpasses usa's production and consumption by 1000” lacks clear parallel phrasing. In “All of which are experiencing…,” the sentence is a fragment, and “those country” shows a number-agreement error. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise complete sentences, accurate comparisons, and agreement between subjects and nouns.
