IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The bar chart below shows the top ten countries for the production and consumption of electricity in 2014.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar chart illustrates the creation and usage of electricity in 2014 of different countries.

Overall, it is evident that China peaked in both creation and consumption whereas Korea is in the last position. China and United States outnumbered at bigger range than other 8 countries and they followed the same range in production as well as in usage.

Looking at the chart, China had the highest amount of electricity production(5398 billion kWh) when the usage(5322 billion kWh) was as greater as the production. United States took the second highest in production and usage which are 4099 billion kWh and 3866 billion kWh respectively. All other countries like Russia, Japan, India, Canada, France, Brazil, Germany, Korea Rep. displayed similar pattern. But the range of productions are within 1057 billion kWh to 485 billion kWh and the usage ranged from 1038 kWh to 449.5billion kWh.

When it comes to production of electricity Germany , Brazil and France scored almost same. But in the case of consumption electricity was used slightly more in Brazil. Ultimately, China and United States had the same range which were much higher than other countries. Furthermore, those other countries produced and used the electricity likewise.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main contrast: China and the United States lead by a wide margin, while the remaining countries produce and consume much less. The overview also notes that China ranks first and Korea last, and you include several accurate figures for the two leading countries. However, the account is only partly complete: the claim that Korea is last is not true for every measure, since Germany has the lowest production, and Germany’s consumption (582.5) is notably higher than its production (526.6). The statement that all other countries show a similar pattern overlooks this exception, while the final comparison about Brazil, France and Germany is vague and does not report the relevant values. Select and explain the key exceptions more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “When it comes to” signal shifts between sections. However, progression is not consistently clear: the final paragraph repeats the point that China and the United States are much higher, already made in the overview, rather than adding a distinct comparison. “All other countries … displayed similar pattern” also groups several figures together without showing how they relate, and “Ultimately” introduces another repeated summary. Organise the details into clearer comparisons—for example, the two leading countries, then the mid-ranking group and Germany’s exception—and use references that make each comparison explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “production,” “consumption,” “highest,” and “ranged from,” so the main subject is generally clear. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing a chart: “creation and usage” is less suitable than the chart’s terms, “peaked” suggests a change over time, and “outnumbered at bigger range” does not clearly express the large gap between the top two countries and the rest. “Scored” is also an awkward choice for electricity figures. These limitations make the description less precise and lead to repetition of “range” and “same.” Use standard reporting collocations and vary them carefully to describe rankings, amounts and differences.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple statements and longer structures, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison introduced by “when it comes to.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately. For example, “when the usage … was as greater as the production” has an incorrect comparative structure, and “United States took the second highest … which are” has problems with the article and agreement. In “the range of productions are,” the subject and verb do not agree, while the parenthetical figures need clearer punctuation. These errors sometimes make relationships between figures difficult to follow. Practise accurate comparative forms, subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, then check each longer sentence for a clear subject and verb.
