Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, identifying the highest income group as the most prominent. However, the reporting of data is inconsistent and contains inaccuracies. For instance, the description of the middle-income group (50,000–74,999) is confusing and contradicts the provided chart data, as the text claims the figure remained the same while simultaneously providing fluctuating numbers. Additionally, the description of the lowest income group is somewhat muddled. While the key features are selected, the lack of precision in reporting the data points limits the score. To improve, ensure that the data cited matches the visual information exactly and avoid contradictory statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'In 2007', 'Similarly', and 'In middle' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of referencing is occasionally confusing, particularly the use of 'he' to refer to inanimate data points (e.g., 'Then he Fluctuating slightly'). This creates a mechanical feel and occasionally obscures the logical flow. Paragraphing is present, but the internal cohesion within the third paragraph is weak due to the contradictory data reporting. Improving the use of pronouns and ensuring consistent logical progression between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts at using descriptive terms like 'fluctuating', 'sharply rise', and 'decline'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'living people in houses' instead of 'households' and the incorrect use of 'he' to refer to statistical data. Some phrasing is repetitive, and the control over academic register is limited. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends (e.g., 'a marginal decrease' instead of 'fluctuating slightly down') and ensure that vocabulary is used in a contextually appropriate manner.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The bar charts gives'), tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'it is sharply rise up'), and incorrect preposition usage. The misuse of pronouns ('he' for data) is a recurring issue that affects the accuracy of the writing. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and ensuring consistent verb tenses would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
