Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the task by identifying some key features of the chart, such as the growth in the highest income bracket. However, the analysis is inconsistent and lacks precision. Several statements are factually confusing or inaccurate based on the provided data, such as the claim that the $50,000-$74,999 group remained stable, which contradicts the visual evidence. Furthermore, the description of trends is often vague, and the report fails to provide a clear, comprehensive overview of the data across all categories. To improve, ensure that comparisons are accurate and that the main trends are clearly highlighted rather than listing isolated observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression of ideas is frequently disrupted by unclear referencing and awkward transitions. For example, the transition 'By 2011, the $25,000-$49,999 group surged' is followed by a confusing comparison that lacks clarity. Cohesive devices are used, but they are often mechanical or misused, such as 'Moreover miner change is analyzed'. The paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, making the overall flow of the report somewhat disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would enhance the coherence of the writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is limited and sometimes inappropriate for an academic report. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'miner change' (minor), 'annal budget' (annual), and 'nearly neglected' (negligible). The student relies on basic terminology and struggles to express numerical data or trends with precision. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequent errors in spelling and collocation hinder the overall quality of the response. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuation', 'proportion', and 'significant increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('This show a general trend'), incorrect prepositions ('over the period pf time'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas). There are also significant spelling errors, such as '1015' for 2015 and 'less then' instead of 'less than'. While the student attempts to use complex structures, these are often marred by errors. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
