Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the yearly revenue for three years such as 2007,2011 and 2015 in the United states. The data is calibrated in numbers.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that income group between $75000-$99999 and $50000-$74999 was constant in all three years. However, all other income groups had fluctuations in different years.

To begin with, in 2007, income group of less than $25000 had 25 million households and it show some growth in 2011, but, it was declined by certain numbers. Moreover, income group of $25000-$49000, had nearly 27 million households, which express some development in 2011, surprisingly, it also declined by few numbers .

In 2007, income group of $[redacted phone]9 had 21 million households, which remain same in year 2011 and 2015 respectively. Furthermore, the same pattern is also noticed in income group of $75000-$99999, which had nearly 14 million household in 2007, which remain constant in year 2011 and 2015. However, income group of $[redacted phone] or more held the highest number of household in 2007, which was declined by nearly 2 million households in 2011, but again it jumped nearly 33 million people in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the chart and provides some comparisons. However, the analysis is hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the claim that the $50,000-$74,999 group remained constant is contradicted by the visual data, which shows clear changes. Additionally, the description of trends is somewhat vague, using terms like 'some growth' or 'declined by certain numbers' without specifying the actual figures provided in the chart. To reach a higher band, you must ensure that the data points cited are accurate and that the trends are described with greater precision, focusing on the most significant changes rather than listing every category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. There is a clear progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the repetitive use of 'income group of' at the start of sentences. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transition between ideas could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is occasionally interrupted by the imprecise reporting of the data, which makes the logical connection between the years feel slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. You rely on basic verbs like 'had', 'show', and 'declined'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'data is calibrated in numbers' and 'it also declined by few numbers'. To improve, you should incorporate more varied vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'experienced a marginal increase', or 'reached a peak'. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and nouns will help convey the information more professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in year 2011'), subject-verb agreement ('it show some growth'), and tense consistency ('which remain same'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas (e.g., '2007,2011'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past data will significantly improve your writing.
