Student answer (Band 5.0)
This chart shows number of households in US according to their annual income in 2007,2011 and 2015. In this i can see households separated under 5 categories of incomes. Firstly the households having income less than 25000$. Additionally in 2007 there were 25 house holds, in 2011 there were 28 and if i talk about 2015 there were little less than 2011. Under this category almost 26 household fall in 2007 , 30 households in 2011 and little les than 30 almost 28 in 2015. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the chart, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identified the categories, the description of the data is repetitive and lacks a clear overview or summary of the trends. The use of 'if i talk about' is informal and detracts from the academic tone required for Task 1. To improve, you should group the data more effectively—for example, by highlighting which income brackets increased or decreased over the period—rather than listing figures for each category individually. A clear 'overview' paragraph summarizing the main trends is essential for a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow. The progression of ideas is mechanical, relying heavily on repetitive transitions like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'While if i talk about'. There is a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices to link the data points together. To improve, you should organize your response into distinct paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and two body paragraphs grouping the data logically. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', 'Conversely') would significantly improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You frequently use the word 'category' and 'households' without much variation. There are also errors in formatting and terminology, such as '100,0004' (likely a typo for 100,000+) and 'tenures' (which is not the correct term for years or periods). The language is generally informal, which is not suitable for an Academic Task 1 report. To reach a higher band, try to use more precise vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'witnessed a decline', or 'the highest proportion'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in US', 'in 2007 there were 25 house holds'), punctuation issues, and informal phrasing ('if i talk about'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with little evidence of complex sentence forms. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and word order. To improve, focus on using a mix of simple and complex sentences and ensure you proofread for basic errors like missing articles and incorrect pluralization. Using more formal, objective language (avoiding 'I') will also help improve the overall quality of your writing.
