Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to accurately interpret the data provided in the chart. The student confuses the categories of household income with individual earnings and misreads the numerical values (e.g., confusing 25 million households with 27,000 dollars). The overview is missing, and the description of trends is fragmented and confusing, making it difficult to identify the main features or comparisons. The response does not clearly distinguish between the number of households and the income brackets, leading to a failure in addressing the task requirements effectively. To improve, focus on accurately identifying the axes and labels before writing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay lacks a logical flow. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are used incorrectly or in a mechanical way, such as 'In next column' or 'As count of third', which do not clearly link the data points. The referencing is often unclear, making it hard for the reader to follow which data point is being discussed. The lack of a clear introduction and overview further hinders the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is limited and often misused, which significantly impacts the clarity of the report. Phrases like 'shuffles at a time peak', 'vast pace', and 'boost change' are not appropriate for an academic report. There is a lack of precision in describing trends; for example, using 'shrink' and 'jummed up' (jumped) instead of more formal terms like 'decreased' or 'increased'. The misuse of terminology regarding the chart data (e.g., 'earning of individual') suggests a struggle with basic descriptive language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement ('income... was rised'), sentence structure (fragments like 'which was shuffles at a time peak'), and article usage. Many sentences are poorly constructed, making the meaning ambiguous. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, they are almost always inaccurate, leading to a lack of control over basic grammar. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with misplaced commas and periods throughout the text.
