Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0
The response fails to address the task prompt. The instructions clearly ask to describe a chart regarding US household income, but the student has written about fatal, serious, and slight injuries from weapons in Great Britain. This is a complete mismatch of the data provided. Consequently, the response is off-topic. While the student attempts to report figures and percentages, the content is entirely irrelevant to the prompt. To improve, you must carefully read the provided visual data and ensure your summary directly reflects the information presented in the specific task question.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response shows some attempt at paragraphing and uses basic cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'Overall'. However, the logical progression is severely hampered by the inclusion of fragmented, incomplete sentences and repetitive phrasing. The text contains several broken lines and disjointed segments, particularly in the latter half, which disrupts the flow of information. While there is an attempt to organize the data into categories, the lack of a coherent connection to the actual task makes the overall structure ineffective. Improving the clarity of transitions and ensuring sentences are complete would help the reader follow the argument more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate. There is a reliance on basic terms such as 'number', 'figures', and 'injuries'. The student attempts to use some academic vocabulary like 'illustrates', 'escalated', and 'collates', but these are often used in contexts that do not make sense due to the off-topic nature of the content. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'fatal diseases' to describe injuries, which is imprecise. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using a wider range of vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'peaked', or 'remained stable', and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'slight injuries that occurs'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence structures. Many sentences are incomplete or lack proper punctuation, making the text difficult to parse. The student attempts to use complex structures, but these are often faulty or result in confusing syntax. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using articles correctly. Proofreading for sentence fragments would also significantly improve the clarity of your writing.
