Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the US household income data from 2007 to 2015. However, the task achievement is severely limited because the student fails to accurately report the main features or key data points from the chart. Instead of citing clear figures (such as the number of households in millions for specific income brackets), the text contains confused references like "bars in 2025" and vague descriptions ("black, white, grey bar"). Furthermore, the comparisons are muddled and fail to convey the actual trends shown in the visual data. The overview is weak and inaccurate, reflecting a misunderstanding of the task requirements. Consequently, this falls under Band 4.0 as it responds to the task only minimally and with significant inaccuracies in data interpretation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organization of the text is highly disjointed, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While the writer attempts to use transitional markers such as "Overall", "Firstly", and "Secondly", these devices are applied mechanically and inappropriately given the chaotic presentation of data. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within each paragraph is broken by confusing statements and abrupt shifts in focus. Referencing is frequently unclear, with pronouns and demonstratives like "the third graph which is distnict from others" failing to point to any coherent referent. Overall, the information and ideas are not arranged coherently, which aligns with the descriptors for Band 4.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and frequently inappropriate for an academic task. Words and phrases such as "yearly income numerous of households", "very less bar", and "annual wealth of America" demonstrate a severe lack of control over word choice and collocation. The student struggles to refer to basic graphical elements and data correctly, using terms like "graphs" instead of categories or years. Spelling and word formation are problematic throughout the text. Because the lexical range is extremely limited and errors frequently strain the reader's understanding, the performance matches the criteria for Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical structures attempted are severely flawed, resulting in a text where meaning is frequently distorted or obscured. The response lacks a reliable mix of accurate simple and complex sentences. There are persistent, major errors in basic sentence construction, such as "Overall, it's proportionally in 2007 is similar in 2011 yearly income" and "the last one graph is higher than boths." Punctuation and verb tense usage are also unreliable, with confusion between past and future timeframes (e.g., "bars in 2025"). Because errors are frequent across all sentences and frequently impede communication, the appropriate score for this criterion is Band 4.0.
