Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the US household income chart across three years. However, there are significant data inaccuracies and misreadings. For example, the student claims that households earning $100,000 or more were on the higher side in all three years, but in 2011 this category was closely matched by others, and the highest group fluctuated. Furthermore, the text mentions less than $2500 and $75000 to $99,999 being constant, whereas the chart shows $50,000-$74,999 was completely constant at 21 million, and $75,000-$79,999 actually changed from 14.5 to 14 to 15 million. The overview is overly simplistic, and key comparisons are either omitted or factually incorrect based on the visual data. Therefore, the response partially fulfills the requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four short paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body details. However, logical progression is hindered by frequent structural issues and incorrect referencing of data. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as starting sentences with 'While,' or 'In addition to these,' which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information is confused, blending disparate income brackets without clear thematic unity. Overall organization shows an underlying structure, but cohesion is mechanical and sometimes faulty, pulling the score down to this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'household', 'people', and 'annual income'. There are noticeable word-form errors, such as 'The bar chart illustrate' (should be illustrates), 'number of household' (should be households), and missing zeros in numerical figures like 'less than $2500'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are limited, and spelling or collocation errors occasionally create confusion for the reader. The lexical range is minimally adequate to convey the basic topic, but lack of precision and frequent lexical slips restrict the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complex structures often contain noticeable errors. Grammatical inaccuracies are frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The bar chart illustrate'), missing articles ('in the year 2007,2011'), and punctuation errors like missing spaces after commas and periods. Sentences such as 'the annual income of individuals in between $75,000 and $99,999 are on the lower side' demonstrate faulty grammatical control where income brackets are incorrectly described as the people themselves. These persistent errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
