Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the provided bar chart showing US households by annual income across three years. An overview is attempted, noting the highest and lowest categories, although it is phrased somewhat confusingly. While several key features and figures are mentioned—such as the 25 million in the lowest income bracket in 2007 and the peak of 33 million in the highest bracket in 2015—there are significant inaccuracies in reporting data (e.g., stating the 2007 peak for the highest income group was 29 million instead of 29.5 million, and general confusion with ranges like '27 to 30 million'). Furthermore, some data descriptions are disjointed or underdeveloped. Consequently, the response covers parts of the task but with noticeable omissions and inaccuracies, aligning best with Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into four brief paragraphs, starting with an introduction and an overall statement. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by awkward transitions, confusing phrasing, and unclear referencing. For instance, the transition 'Turninig to the remaining category' attempts to introduce new data, but the sentences themselves are run-on and grammatically tangled, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, and paragraphing is inadequate due to the poor integration of supporting details. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, relying on terms like 'number of households', 'earning', and 'peaked'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as 'household early income' instead of 'households earning', 'accounted at' instead of 'stood at', and 'his peaked' instead of 'it peaked'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are unsuccessful due to inaccuracies in form and meaning. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey a basic topic, the errors cause some difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, incorrect prepositions, and faulty verb tenses (e.g., 'then it is gradually increased in $25,000-$49,999 was about at 27 million', 'it was decreased in 2011 to reach at around', and 'Moreover those number for was 27 million'). Punctuation is also erratic, with missing commas and improper spacing around numbers. Because complex structures are frequently faulty and errors cause constant difficulty for the reader, the grammar performance reflects Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 or evaluated strictly at 5.0 based on frequency of errors.
