Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by reporting information from the chart, but there are significant inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the student states that households earning between $25,000 and $49,999 remained stable at approximately 21 million, whereas the chart shows this group started at 27 million in 2007, rose to 29.5 million in 2011, and dropped to 28.5 million in 2015 (the 21 million figure actually belongs to the $50,000–$74,999 bracket). Additionally, sentences like 'plenty of us households whoes annual income less than $25000 was the highest in year 2015' conflict with the data showing the highest group overall was $100,000 or more in 2015. Due to these frequent misreadings and a lack of a coherent overview of the main trends, the response falls into the Band 4.5 to 5.0 range, warranting a Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response exhibits some basic organization into paragraphs, attempting to use signposts like 'Overall' and 'Scrutinising deeper in to the obtainable information'. However, the overall progression is disrupted by confusing phrasing, repetitive sentence structures, and incorrect paragraph breaks such as 'Hereby, i conclude my report'. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, and referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of ideas. This aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors, where organisation is present but lacks clear progression and control of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very limited and basic, featuring frequent spelling and word-choice errors such as 'annunal', 'plent', 'whoes', 'remaind', 'approximatliy', 'Menwhil', 'throuht', 'pinacle', 'depper', and 'incomr'. While the student attempts some less common phrases like 'prima facia gland' (misusing 'prima facie' and 'glance') and 'scrutinising deeper', these attempts result in noticeable errors and unnatural collocations that cause difficulty for the reader. This performance sits firmly at Band 4.0 to 4.5, reflecting a basic and restricted lexical range with frequent errors that strain comprehension.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is extremely weak throughout the response. The text is dominated by simple sentence fragments and faulty attempts at complex structures, missing essential verbs and prepositions (e.g., 'us household whoes income 100000 or more at approximatly 29 million'). Punctuation and capitalization are poorly handled, with spaces placed before punctuation marks and many sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation. Grammatical errors are very frequent and frequently distort meaning, aligning with the Band 4 descriptor where errors are prominent and hinder communication.
