Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the bar chart regarding US household income across three years. However, there are numerous data inaccuracies and confusing statements throughout the response. For example, the student writes that 'the maximum income $100,000 or more recorded in 2015, while second larget was in 2007 less than 30 million among households', which is awkwardly expressed and mathematically imprecise. Furthermore, the claim that the $50,000-$74,999 bracket was 'around similar in all three years... in 20 million households' is fairly accurate, but other figures (such as the number of households in the $25,000-$49,999 bracket in 2007 being 28 million instead of the actual 27 million) contain errors. The overview is disjointed and lacks clarity. Consequently, the response only partially satisfies the requirements of Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into four paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor cohesion and confusing syntax. Phrases like 'on the hand there minor drop around 29 million by 2015' demonstrate weak and mechanical transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between years and income brackets. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within sentences and paragraphs is faulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on direct lifts from the prompt such as 'households', 'annual income', and 'million'. There are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'second larget' instead of 'second largest', 'less than 25000 dollar' instead of dollars, and 'annual saalry' containing a spelling mistake. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are generally unsuccessful or imprecise, causing some difficulty for the reader in understanding the intended data points.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex attempts are grammatically faulty or incomplete. Examples include missing verbs and incorrect subject-verb agreement, such as 'The bar chart compare' instead of compares, and dangling modifiers. Punctuation and article usage are also weak throughout the text. While simple sentences are sometimes accurate, frequent grammatical errors persist and occasionally impede smooth communication of the statistical data.
