Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally, failing to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words by falling slightly short. The overview attempts to highlight some main features, such as identifying the highest income category, but contains inaccuracies and confusion regarding data points. The reporting of specific figures is confused and difficult to follow, showing significant problems with data interpretation. For example, the text states that the earning less than $25,000 had 25 million which increased to around 29 million and decreased marginally recorded 27 million in 2007, 2011, and 2015 respectively, which misinterprets the data trends. To improve, the writer needs to ensure the word count requirement is met, provide a clearer and more accurate overview, and report the figures precisely without contradictory statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner, leading to a lack of clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information within paragraphs lacks logical structure. While basic cohesive devices such as 'In contrast' and 'Moreover' are present, referencing is often unclear or confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons being made. For instance, transitional phrases link disconnected data points awkwardly. To achieve a higher band, the writer must structure the response into logical paragraphs—such as separating the overview, trends, and comparisons—and ensure that cohesive devices are used accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, showing a limited range that is only minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as 'earing' instead of 'earnings', 'recorde' instead of 'recorded', and the strange phrasing 'minutes' instead of 'million'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors occasionally strain the reader's understanding. To improve, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range by incorporating more precise terms for describing statistical data and trends, such as verbs like 'surged' or 'plummeted', and carefully check word forms and spelling before finalising the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns. Attempts at complex sentences frequently result in faulty structures, awkward phrasing, and frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage. Examples of grammatical instability include 'the highest number of household recorded in 2007 and 2015 whose earing was' and missing prepositions or punctuation marks throughout the text, such as missing spaces before new sentences. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must work on constructing grammatically sound complex sentences, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement, accurate verb tense usage, and correct punctuation.
