Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement, containing only 137 words, with 17 words copied directly from the prompt. The student attempts to report some features of the chart, such as mentioning the stable income bracket of $50,000 to $74,999 and the highest bracket of $100,000 or more in 2015. However, the response only minimally and tangentially engages with the data as a whole. The descriptions are confused, repetitive, and lack a clear overview of the main trends. Many figures are vaguely stated or misreported, meaning the task is addressed only at a very basic level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
Information and ideas are not arranged coherently in this response. The text is written as a single dense paragraph without proper paragraphing, lacking an introductory overview and logical progression. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, resulting in run-on sentences and difficult transitions between thoughts, such as abrupt shifts between income brackets and years. Referencing is unclear, and the overall structure fails to guide the reader through the data in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on terms provided in the prompt such as 'households', 'annual income', and 'millions'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and expression, such as 'have almost equal number of annual income' and 'people hve', which strain the reader's understanding. The student makes limited attempts to use less common vocabulary, but the restricted range and frequent inaccuracies place the response at a lower band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or poorly constructed attempts at complex sentences. Errors are frequent and often distort meaning, including issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'charts shows', 'households have'), incorrect prepositions, and missing articles. Punctuation is weak, with run-on clauses linked improperly by commas rather than full stops or conjunctions, causing considerable difficulty for the reader.
