Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task and fails to reach the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping at 142 words. While the student attempts to report some data from the chart, the selection of information is confused and lacks clarity. For instance, the overview contains confusing and inaccurate statements, such as claiming that households earning $100,000 or more occurred in 2015 as an overall trend, or misinterpreting the income brackets. Furthermore, key comparisons are missing, and some reported figures are inaccurate or garbled, such as stating '28 housholds earn Less than $25000 recorded in 2007, but it decreased in 2011 by 27million households'. To improve, the writer needs to ensure all parts of the prompt are fully covered, select the main features accurately, provide a clearer overview, and write enough words.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organisation with paragraph breaks, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel abrupt and disjointed, as seen in the opening sentence of the second paragraph: 'Regarding the earning by 32million households stood at...'. Cohesive devices are used inadequately and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'further morce' and 'Turning the remaning catagories'. Referencing is also confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information. To move to a higher band, the writer should ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with appropriate, accurate cohesive devices and that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are frequent spelling mistakes and word-choice errors, such as 'housholds', 'heigh', 'hoeghest', 'recorf', and 'catagories'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by inaccuracies in word form and collocation. For example, writing 'earning' instead of 'households' or 'income brackets' causes confusion. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, use terms related to charts and data more precisely, and check their spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex attempts. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'the highest earning in 2007 were Less than $25,000' and 'lowest number of house holds were earning in 2007 was'. Punctuation and article use are also problematic throughout the text. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and prevent the text from flowing smoothly. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and reducing grammatical errors.
