Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features of the bar chart while containing notable inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data. For instance, the student misinterprets the chart's units and values, stating that the $25,000 to $49,999 category 'jumped dramatically to 30' and using percentages inappropriately for absolute numbers (e.g., 'rose with 29%'). Although an overview is attempted, it is unclear and poorly articulated, mentioning a 'millions or higher' income level which does not accurately reflect the categories shown. Ideas are limited and under-developed, and the report lacks a clear, accurate summary of the main trends across the three years for the five income brackets. To move up, the student must accurately extract and report data figures from the visual prompt without confusing raw numbers with percentages, and provide a coherent overview of the primary trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some organization with an introductory sentence, an overview attempt, and body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are inadequate, inaccurate, or used mechanically. Transition phrases like 'Divind into the report', 'Unlike, ended with decreased', and 'On the other hands' are used incorrectly or awkwardly, disrupting the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion of the paragraphs is weak, making the relationships between data points difficult to follow. Pronoun referencing and signposting are frequently faulty. To improve coherence, the student should use logical connectors more naturally and structure paragraphs so that each focuses on a distinct, clearly introduced trend or comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'subsequently fell', 'plummeted', and 'fluctuated slightly', but these attempts are often undermined by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'Divind', 'amount of household spents', and confusing numbers with percentages. Spelling and word-choice errors occur frequently and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise data being conveyed. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to build a wider range of precise vocabulary relating to data trends and ensure that words are used in correct collocations and grammatical forms without spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with frequent errors when attempting complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, verb forms, prepositions, and article usage, such as 'the chart depicts the information on thr number of households five with different graphs', 'the number of household with $50,000 to $74,999 was stayed', and 'in the end year'. Punctuation is also erratic in places, with missing spaces after commas and periods. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and impede smooth comprehension. To improve, the writer must work on basic sentence construction, accurate tense and voice selection, and minimizing basic grammatical slips.
