Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the three years and several income groups, and it includes some relevant figures, such as about 25 million households in the lowest bracket in 2007 and roughly 33 million in the highest bracket in 2015. However, the task is addressed only minimally because the overview is mainly a description of colours rather than the chart’s main trends. Some data are also misreported: the $75,000–$99,999 group is described as having about 15 million in 2007, but it was about 14.5 million, while the $50,000–$74,999 group stayed near 21 million throughout. The claim that the other groups remained in the same condition in 2011 overlooks changes. Focus on the largest and smallest groups and their changes across all three years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic paragraph structure, with an opening, an overview-like paragraph, and descriptions of 2007 and later years. The years provide some chronological organisation, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Whereas,” and “However” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is difficult to follow because the overview lists colours instead of grouping the data by income category, and the 2007 paragraph repeats categories and figures without a clear order. “Whereas” is also used where the relationship between the clauses is unclear. Organise the report into a concise overview followed by comparisons grouped by income level, and use linking words only when they express a clear contrast or addition.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “income,” “range,” “million,” and “highest,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the vocabulary is basic and often inaccurate or repetitive, which makes several points hard to interpret. Phrases such as “the gray colour hold more houses” and “the high income owner again grow up” do not describe the chart naturally; “households” and “the number increased” would be more suitable. There are also spelling errors, including “comparision,” “thier,” “demostrate,” and “comdition.” Use the income brackets themselves rather than colours, and practise accurate chart language such as “rose,” “remained stable,” and “accounted for.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts some longer sentences and uses past-time references, but grammatical control is weak and errors occur throughout. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in examples such as “This bar-chart make” and “the rust colour show”; past-tense forms are also faulty in “held” and “grow up” constructions. Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries need attention, as in “the lest houses was held” and the run-on final sentence. Capitalisation after full stops is inconsistent, and commas are often attached incorrectly to the following word. These errors sometimes make the intended comparisons difficult to understand. Build accuracy first with clear simple sentences, then practise combining them using correctly formed past-tense verbs and punctuation.
