Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and make an attempt at an overview, noting that the highest-income group is prominent and that the $75,000–$99,999 group changes little. You also report several relevant figures and trends. However, the overview is unclear and includes a key misreading: the highest-income group is not the largest in every year, since the $25,000–$49,999 group is slightly higher in 2011. Some figures are also inaccurate, such as describing the highest-income group as 30 million in 2007 rather than about 29.5 million, and the final comparison is left unfinished. Select the main patterns accurately and support them with clear, complete comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction and overview, then describes income groups in sequence. However, the progression is difficult to follow because most details are joined in one long paragraph using repeated “Then” and “but then.” The overview itself is hard to interpret, and the final sentence stops at “between,” leaving the account incomplete. Grouping related categories into separate body paragraphs and using clearer links such as “By contrast,” “Meanwhile,” and “In 2015” would make comparisons easier to track. Check that each sentence develops one complete point and that references to the income groups remain clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “annual income,” “decline,” “increases,” and “highest level,” so the reader can generally recognise the intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the report less clear, including “amount of houshold,” “manimum,” “hiusehold,” and “house vhold.” Income categories are also expressed inconsistently, with missing currency symbols and incorrect ranges such as “500000 and 740000$.” Use accurate category labels and standard chart language, for example “number of households,” “remained stable,” and “rose to approximately.” Proofreading spelling and number formatting would improve precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt longer sentences with sequencing and contrast, but control is uneven, and frequent errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. Examples include “The bar chart below illustrate,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “the number of household … are,” which also has agreement problems. Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries are often inaccurate; for instance, “in year 2007” and the run-on sequence beginning “Then the household…” need more controlled phrasing and punctuation. Most sentences follow a similar pattern, so practise combining accurate simple sentences with a few well-formed comparisons using “while” or “whereas.”
