Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response identifies several income groups and attempts to describe changes, but it reports major figures inaccurately and omits important comparisons. The chart gives household numbers in millions, not percentages: for example, the under-$25,000 group was about 25 million in 2007, rose to 28.5 million in 2011, then edged down to 28 million in 2015; the response instead gives 29%, 27% and 35%. It also misstates the $100,000-or-more group as merely fluctuating without reporting its strong rise to about 33.5 million in 2015. The overview that lower-income households increased is therefore not well supported. The response is also one word below the required minimum. Select the main trends accurately and give a clear overview before supporting it with figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: the response begins with an introduction, groups several income categories in the middle, and ends with a concluding statement. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The final paragraph repeats broad claims rather than summarising the most important overall patterns, and “Consequently” does not show a clear cause-and-effect relationship. Some references are also difficult to follow, such as “this number” after the $25,000–$49,000 category and “By third position,” whose meaning is unclear. Use a distinct overview and organise the body by comparable trends, with clear references to each income band. More accurate linking and paragraph development would make the information easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “fluctuated,” “increased” and “remained,” and it attempts to describe trends rather than simply list categories. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or awkward. “29%” and “35%” wrongly present household counts as percentages, while “same position” is not a natural way to describe an unchanged figure. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “proporrtion,” “decets,” “Simlarly” and “deaceds,” which reduce clarity. Use precise terms such as “number of households” and “million,” and choose trend verbs that match the data. Proofreading spelling and collocations would improve control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer sentences joined with “while,” “and” and “whereas”-type comparisons, so there is some structural variety. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors recur in agreement, articles, tense and sentence boundaries. For example, “The families who earned less than $25,000 was” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “across the year of 2007, 2011, 2015” uses an awkward singular construction for multiple years. The sentence beginning “The households whose income between…” is missing a verb, and punctuation is inconsistent, including the capitalised “The” after a comma. Practise accurate comparative sentence patterns and check each clause for a complete subject and verb.
