Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

One of the more prevalent disagreements within the academic world is between the importance of History versus Science and technology in school. Some say history is one of the most important, while others say Science and technology. If we view this debate in a non-capitalistic way, I believe history is a more important subject when it comes to both morality and growth of the world.

Individuals arguing for Science and technology being more important in today's world have valid arguments that seem more practical at face value. These will include arguments stating the fact that more and more people are going for STEM subjects in college and university when they have a choice to choose what they study, while students in subjects like history and literature are reducing. Moreover, in a capitalistic society, it is important to consider what will benefit your survival the most. Working within the scientific and technological space will have more econimical benefits for you as an individual.

On the other hand, history as a subject is important majorly because it teaches clear ways to avoid catastrophies that have occur in the past. A lack of knowledge of these events causes repititions of them. Moreover, when taught accurate history, it helps reduce biases. For example, both Pakistan and India have different information in their history books about the same topic: their independence. If this information was more accurate, and similar, the chances of people seeing eye-to-eye may be greater. This also reduces the probability of hate and hate-driven violence.

While both sides make sense in their own right, history is more important. The factors mentioned above are more important when considering humanity: we were not born to work and earn money, we are primarily social beings and realising that will only cause us more good.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both perspectives and state a clear preference for History, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The discussion of Science and technology is relevant, with employability and financial security offered as reasons, while the example of differing Pakistani and Indian accounts gives the History argument a concrete illustration. This meets the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the Science paragraph relies mainly on career benefits, and the claim that accurate history could help people “see eye-to-eye” needs more explanation. Your final point about people being social beings is also asserted rather than supported. To strengthen the response further, explain how each subject benefits society and connect your example more explicitly to your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “While both sides make sense” help readers follow the contrast, and the example is placed appropriately within the History paragraph. Some links are less precise or feel mechanical, however. “Moreover” introduces additional points in both body paragraphs without showing exactly how they relate, and “This also reduces” has an unclear reference: it is not immediately clear whether “this” means accurate history or agreement between the countries. The conclusion also moves quickly from the subject comparison to a broad claim about human nature. Make these connections explicit and use a wider range of linking methods.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “capitalistic society,” “STEM subjects,” “biases,” and “hate-driven violence.” These choices help express ideas beyond basic description, although some less common expressions are not used naturally or precisely. For example, “clear ways to avoid catastrophies” is an awkward way to describe lessons from past events, while “more economical benefits” is not the natural collocation for financial advantages. There are also spelling errors in “econimical,” “catastrophies,” and “repititions,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your argument sound more fluent and controlled without changing its meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “when they have a choice” and the conditional structure “If this information was more accurate.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and awkward constructions persist. In “Some say history is one of the most important, while others say Science and technology,” the second clause is incomplete because it omits what those subjects are considered to be. “A lack of knowledge of these events causes repetitions of them” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between “knowledge” and “them.” In addition, “the chances … may be greater” would be clearer with a more explicit comparison. Review clause completeness and pronoun references, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
