Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the modern era, there is a ongoing debate about the importance of subjects like history and science. While some experts believe history is significant, others believe in the growing importance of science and technology in the ever evolving world.

A compelling reason for the paramount importance of history subject is that it preserves the origin and cultural heritage of every nation in the world. It accounts for the most crucial events of the past. For instance, The great world war and its tragedies are recorded and presented to the public, all to the credit of history or else we would not have known about such an event. Moreover, every nation in the world consider their history pivotal to their culture and traditions.

On the other hand, some people suggest that science and technology as subjects carry more weight as it has conquered the world transforming it into a global village. The advocates of this view suggest that science is the future of the world and must be taught to students at school as a priority subject. They believe that science is a global necessity and the future success of the states is subjective to the advancements in scientific knowledge and technology.

In my opinion, both History and Science are vital to the primary and elementary education as they serve as foundational bridge in it. While historical knowledge preserves our cultural heritage and origin, scientific knowlege proves as the emerging need. Hence science and history both subjects must be the part of the school curriculums all over the globe

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both perspectives and give a clear opinion that History and Science should both be included in school curricula. The discussion of History is supported with the example of the world wars and their recorded consequences, while the Science paragraph explains its role in technological progress and future national success. However, the two views are not developed equally: the History example is asserted rather than explained, and the Science argument relies on broad claims such as science having “conquered the world.” Your own position is clear, but it would be stronger if you explained how the subjects complement one another or gave a specific example of their value to students. This would make the relevant ideas more fully developed and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposting such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” helps readers identify the shift in argument. Within paragraphs, however, some connections are broad rather than fully explained. For example, the move from the world wars being recorded to every nation valuing its history does not show exactly how the example supports the wider claim. The conclusion also repeats the central position without drawing the arguments together. To strengthen the progression, use clearer links between each claim, its explanation, and its example, while retaining this effective paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary and attempt less common expressions, including “cultural heritage,” “pivotal,” “global necessity,” and “scientific knowledge.” These choices help communicate the topic, and the meaning remains clear. Some wording is imprecise or does not collocate naturally: “subjective to the advancements” appears to mean dependent on or shaped by advances, while “foundational bridge” is unclear in this context. There are also spelling and form slips, including “knowlege” and “ever evolving.” Aim for precise, natural combinations rather than elevated wording for its own sake. More accurate topic vocabulary for education, historical understanding, and technological development would add flexibility and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “While some experts believe…” and “as they serve…”. Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “there is a ongoing debate” needs the article “an,” and “every nation … consider” requires subject–verb agreement (“considers”). In “science and technology … carry more weight as it has conquered,” the pronoun and verb do not agree clearly with the plural subject. The final sentence also needs a clearer grammatical construction around “serve as foundational bridge.” Review articles, agreement, and pronoun reference, and check punctuation and sentence endings. Greater accuracy in these areas would make your varied structures more controlled.
