Some people say History is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant example form your own knowledge or experience.

The debate over whether schools should prioritize history or STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) remains highly contentious. While history provides critical cultural and moral foundations, I believe that science and technology are more indispensable for socioeconomic advancement in the modern era.

On the one hand, history plays a vital role in shaping national identity and civic responsibility. By understanding historical contexts, students learn from past societal mistakes, such as global conflicts and economic crises, which helps them prevent these errors from recurring. Furthermore, a deep comprehension of history fosters empathy and cultural awareness, teaching younger generations to respect diversity and appreciate their roots. For instance, studying world history encourages international diplomacy by highlighting the common struggles and achievements of humanity, creating well-rounded and socially conscious citizens.

On the other hand, the contemporary world is driven by innovation, making science and technology highly crucial. In today’s competitive job market, proficiency in STEM fields directly correlates with high-paying career opportunities and job security, as automation and digitization reshape industries. From a broader perspective, technological breakthroughs are the primary drivers of societal progress. Advancements in medical science, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy are essential to solving existential global threats like climate change and pandemics. For example, during global health crises, it is scientific research and technological engineering—rather than historical knowledge—that deliver immediate, life-saving solutions.

In conclusion, although history is essential for cultural preservation and ethical guidance, I believe that science and technology should be prioritized in contemporary education. These pragmatic disciplines equip students with actionable skills and drive the innovations necessary to sustain and advance human civilization.
