Student answer (Band 7.5)
In the modern world, with the rapid advancement of science and technology, a few people believe that history is one of the most crucial subjects in school. In contrast, others argue that science and technology are far more essential. I partly agree with this statement as science and technology are the backbone of education, but the study of historical events is equally crucial.
On the one hand, science and technology help students understand the technical and scientific aspects of the physical world and its components. It educates learners about the composition and working of every matter that exists in the world. It satisfies the learners' curiosity and encourages them to enhance their knowledge and abilities. For instance, knowledge of science and technology enables learners to identify and solve any existing problems in the future through the application of scientific techniques.
On the other hand, knowledge of history ensures that the students are aware of historical events and their importance. The events that took place in the past, their impact around the globe, their significance, and the personalities involved in the event make this subject as significant as the other one. The lessons learned from the historical events will improve the thinking and decision-making abilities of the students. For example, the string of events from the assassination of the Bosnian prince that led to the First World War is a very important and significant piece of history.
To conclude, both of these subjects hold varying significance in society. The world revolves around the advancement of science and technology, so there is no doubt about its importance, but history is a thread of events that completes humanity, so it is equally important to be taught in schools.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the importance of science/technology and history. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of scientific problem-solving and the historical context of the First World War. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how historical knowledge specifically improves decision-making in a modern context, rather than just stating that it does. The conclusion effectively summarizes your stance, ensuring the response is well-balanced.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In contrast' to signal shifts in the argument. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transition between sentences could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of your argument effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'rapid advancement', 'backbone of education', and 'decision-making abilities' are used appropriately. There are some instances where word choice could be more natural, such as 'every matter that exists' or 'a string of events'. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler descriptive terms. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, 'The events that took place in the past... make this subject as significant as the other one' is a well-constructed complex sentence. You show good control over punctuation and basic grammar. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or more varied subordinate clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility in your writing.
