Student answer (Band 6.5)

Around the world, the importance of school subjects have been widely debated in recent years. A large amount of people argue that history is one of the most significant subject, while the others believe that science and technology are more important than history. I am in favor of the latter view because nowadays everything depends on the science.

First and foremost, one significant reason is that I favour science and technology subject because they offer numerous career opportunities for young people in various fields. Due to rapid technological and social changes, these fields have transformed healthcare, communication and transportation, which have directly influenced people's lifestyles and priorities. For example, higher level development in Radiology department including latest model ultrasound machines, X-ray, CT scan and MRI. Another important factor is that these subjects inform about how people faced an abundance of problems at global level such as climate changes and different kinds of the diseases.

On the other hand, some people give preference to the history subject because they know very well it plays a crucial role in our society because of the historical places and wars. Moreover, people want to know about their ancestors history, culture, and tradition, this is the major reason they take interest in history subject. Furthermore, students have studied history because they do not repeat past mistakes. Additionally, youngsters learn about previous events and understand how societies have developed over time, which improves their critical thinking and analytical skills.

In detail, many people prefer choosing history subject but I strongly believe that people should learn about science and technology because in this advance era everyone in this race.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the arguments for science and technology are supported by examples (e.g., medical technology), the explanation of why history is important is a bit generic. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a deeper analysis of the 'why' behind the arguments rather than just listing them. The position is consistent throughout, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the discussion of history to the conclusion is abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, but there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion that occasionally make the text feel slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'Radiology', 'ultrasound', and 'analytical skills'. However, there are some word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'a large amount of people' (should be 'a large number of people') and 'in this advance era' (should be 'advanced era'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the importance of school subjects have been' should be 'has been') and article usage errors ('the history subject'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and punctuation is generally functional but could be more refined. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences would help improve this score.
