Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern societies, History subject has become a topic of debate. As some people believe that it is an important subject, while others argue that in current digital era Science and Technology have more importance than the History. In this essay, I will discuss both points and present my opinion.

On one hand, proponents consider History as an important subject to be taught in educational institutes, as it gives information about the ancient people, their lifestyle, traditions and resources they had. In addition, teaching students about the wars that their ancestors have fought, enable them to realize the importance of living in a peaceful area.

On the other hand, opponents say that the subjects like Science and Technology are more advantageous because it is a need of time. In the current era, aforementioned fields are undergoing numerous advancements for the betterment of a society in many ways. For example, AI, one of the invention of technology has been widely used in hospitals, schools, and research institutes. By training students in these fields will improve their abilities and enable them to pursue their career in demanding subjects.

In my opinion, schools should focus on a balanced approach. There is no doubt by understanding the History of a country or society is very important for students, while the current era, need more individuals having expertise in fields like Science and Technology.

In conclusion, schools should allocate an equal time for teaching History, Science, and Technology. So, pupils will have wide range of understanding about all subjects and will have opportunities to pursue their career according to their choice.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the importance of History and the necessity of Science and Technology. A clear position is established in the introduction and maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant, though some points, such as the benefits of studying history, could be more deeply extended with specific examples rather than general statements. The conclusion effectively summarizes the balanced approach proposed. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints and the author's own opinion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of referencing and substitution techniques to avoid repetitive sentence structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'proponents', 'opponents', and 'advancements'. However, there are minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'History subject' (should be 'the subject of History') and 'one of the invention of technology' (should be 'one of the inventions of technology'). These errors do not impede communication but limit the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the History', 'a History') and subject-verb agreement ('teaching students... enable them'). Additionally, the sentence 'By training students in these fields will improve...' is grammatically incorrect as it lacks a clear subject. Despite these errors, the writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader.
