Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument for History focuses primarily on monuments like the Taj Mahal rather than the broader educational or societal value of the subject. The discussion on Science and Technology is also quite general, relying on broad statements about 'making life easier' rather than specific, well-supported arguments. While the prompt is addressed, the ideas lack the depth and extension required for a higher band score. The position is consistent, but the supporting evidence is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. Phrases like 'Moving to the importance of' and 'On the other hand' are used, but the internal flow within paragraphs is sometimes disjointed. The transition between sentences is occasionally abrupt, and the use of punctuation is inconsistent, which affects the overall flow. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression of ideas could be more refined to ensure a smoother reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. There are several spelling errors, such as 'HISTROY', 'MONEUMENT', 'KNOWLWDGE', and 'THIER'. The student relies on basic vocabulary and occasionally uses words incorrectly, such as 'weigh' instead of 'weight'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the frequent spelling mistakes limit the score. To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of key terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people believes'), missing articles, and run-on sentences. The use of capitalization throughout the entire text is a significant stylistic error that detracts from the formal tone required for an academic essay. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over complex structures.
