Student answer (Band 6.5)
Opinions differ regarding the value some subjects in schools. While some people argue that history is one of the most important school subjects, others believe that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History. Examining both viewpoints provides a clearer understanding of the matter.
One compelling argument in favor of having history as a significant subject is that it will allow all the learners to get a clear understanding of their origin, leadership and migration routes. To explain this, few schools in Kenya allow history as a compulsory subject, as a result of this, few learners get the opportunity to interact with the topics and the content covered by the subject itself. I believe this is one of the main reason why corruption has never been stopped in Kenya. Most graduates are conversant only with the sciences and therefore lack enough skills and knowledge that could have helped them stop corruption.
On the other hand, science and technology is increasingly becoming crucial in the current world since it is essential for production of better medicines and technological tools such as the computers. For the longest time ever, medical experts have never been able to produce the cure for cancer and HIV and AIDS. I believe that if several countries can focus more on science and technology, they will be able to find the cure for those serious illnesses. Furthermore, technology has really helped in making the world to be more global. If governments can concentrate more on technology as a subject in schools, I think a lot are yet to be discovered and can help human beings to discover about other planets.
To conclude, although history as clear advantages, I think that in today’s world subjects like Science and technology are more important than History because they will help in discovering the medicines for the serious illnesses and provide an advanced technology that is crucial in making the world to be more global and can even can help to discover unknown planets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding history is linked to corruption in a way that feels slightly tenuous and under-developed. The discussion on science and technology is more focused, though it relies on generalizations about medical research. To reach a higher band, ensure that the link between the subject matter and the broader societal outcomes is more logically sustained and supported with more nuanced reasoning rather than broad claims about curing all diseases.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the matter' in the introduction, which could be more specific. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'compulsory subject', 'conversant', and 'technological tools'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'history as clear advantages' (should be 'has') and 'making the world to be more global' (should be 'making the world more global'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and academic phrasing would improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'value some subjects' (missing 'of'), 'few schools... allow history' (should be 'offer'), and 'can even can help' (repetition). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant phrasing will help improve your accuracy.
